3.4 Key Switch (Anti-Restart Switch)

Key switch
The diesel model is equipped with a distributor type injection pump. The key switch is equipped with a fuel cut mechanism to
stop the engine automatically.
The gasoline-engine truck is also equipped with an fuel cut engine automatic stop mechanism.
Anti-restart key switch
This key switch has an anti-restarting function.
The key switch will not turn from the ON to the START position while the engine is running to prevent engine trouble or starter
breakage due to improper operation when starting the engine.
The gasoline and diesel models use the same key switch. On the diesel model, the switch wire is connected so that the engine
is preheated with the key switch in ON position.

4.2 Relationship between Electrolyte Specific Gravity and State of Charge

The battery charge condition can be determined by the electrolyte S.G. (1.280 to 1.26 5), and also it can be determined by the
rate of electrolyte decrease. If the electrolyte in the battery cell decreases to the level where the pole plates are exposed within
one month, the battery may be overcharged. If the electrolyte amount remains sufficient for more than three months, the
battery may be poorly charged.

3-32
CHAPTER 3 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
4.3 Precautions for Battery Charging

(1) In a slow charging, the charging current should be

about 1/10 of the capacity of battery.
(2) In quick charging, the battery capacity in ampere (A)
should not be exceeded.
(3) During charging, adjust the charging current so that
the electrolyte temperature does not exceed 45 °C (113
°F). - +
(4) When connecting cables to battery terminals, always
connect the positive (+) terminal first, and when
disconnecting, remove the negative (-) terminal first.
(5) Be sure to provide proper ventilation as hydrogen gas is
generated during charging. 1 501226

5.8 Hour Meter

Hour meter reading system

Three hour-meter readings are available on the meter panel.
For details, refer to 3-56 "Hour Meter".
Key-on time
Engine-on time
Seat switch-on time
(1) Key-on time meter reading is maintained by both the
meter panel and the VCM. A diagnostic code (F-73)
occurs if a time difference in hour meter readings (key-
on time) is detected between the meter panel and the
VCM.
(2) Hour meter reading of engine-on time and seat switch-
on time are maintained by the meter panel only.

Diagnostic code (F-73) (Hour meter warning)

The diagnostic code (F-73) occurs if there is a difference
between the meter panel and the VCM hour meter (Key-on
time) readings. A recovery procedure allows for the recovery
from the said error, in which the smaller value is overwritten
by the larger value to erase the difference between meter
panel and VCM. Service tool is required to update the hour
meter. (For details, see the service tool manual.)

3-56
CHAPTER 3 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Replacing meter panel and VCM

When replacing the meter panel and VCM with new ones,
be sure to observe the instructions below to transfer the
hour meter data to the new meter panel and VCM.
Replacing the meter panel only
After the meter panel is replaced with a new one, a
diagnostic code (F-73) occurs if a time difference in hour
meter readings (key-on time) between the meter panel and
VCM is more than 24 hours. Remove the error with service
tool. Then the hour meter data (key-on time) stored in the
VCM is transferred to the memory in the meter panel. (For
details, see the service tool manual. Turn the key switch to
the ON and OFF, and repeat this procedure 2 to 3 times to
make sure the hour meter reading (key-on time) is
successfully transferred and the diagnostic code (F-73) has
been removed.
Replacing VCM only
After the VCM is replaced with a new one, a diagnostic code
(F-73) occurs if a time difference in hour meter readings
(key-on time) between VCM and meter panel is more than
24 hours. Remove the error with service tool. Then the hour
meter data (key-on time) stored in the VCM is transferred to
the memory in the meter panel. (For details, see the service
tool manual. Turn the key switch to the ON and OFF, and
repeat this procedure 2 to 3 times to make sure the hour
meter reading (key-on time) is successfully transferred and
the diagnostic code (F-73) has been removed.
Replacing both meter panel and VCM
Follow the above procedure (1) for replacing the meter
panel with a new one.
Follow the above procedure (2) for replacing the VCM with a
new one.
Note:
- When replacing the meter panel and/or the VCM, be
sure to replace them with new ones.
- If a meter panel or VCM, which is removed from another
truck, is used, the diagnostic code (F-73) occurs.
- DO NOT remove the diagnostic code if the meter panel
or VCM is replaced with one that has been used on
another truck.
- Removing diagnostic code may overwrite an hour
meter smaller value with a larger value.
- When the meter panel is replaced with a new one, only
the hour meter of key-on time is transferred to the new
meter panel. After the replacement, hour meter
readings of engine on-time and seat switch-on time will
return to "zero".

6. Wire Color
Wire colors given in the table below are the standard colors (base colors). For wiring composed of two colors, the first letter of
the color coding is the base color, and the second letter is the marking color.
Example: The wire color code of B/W indicates that its base color is B (black) with a W (white) marking color.

Note: For wiring identification, the same wiring color must be used for the circuit between the power supply and the load.

R CAUTION
Be careful that allowable current of solid wires and that of strand wires are different even if they are of the same diameter.
