Application of Knowledge, Culture Implications, and Influence 2

The understanding of how culture affects our personalities and attitudes is very important

to how we live life with other people. As the text states, things like culture shock are frequent

when around other people, even some who might be neighbors or close friends. Because the

world is how it is, a single community in the US could be built on any amount of unique cultural

groups because of the ability to travel and live how and where you want. Because of this, the

importance of the ability to understand and adapt to other cultures and heritages is even more

important.

This is why it’s nice that I was able to grow up the way I did, with the ability to adapt and

understand how others work and live and to be able to tolerate it quite well, most of the time

inserting myself into their culture and traditions as I learn, trying not to offend anyone.

The biggest application that I was able to take away from this chapter was the idea that

different attitudes towards different ideas or concepts have varying degrees of severity, and that

my amount of severity might not be the same as others. I might find the topic of politics super

important, to the point that I’ll argue for hours with someone else who views it the same way. On

the other hand, there are probably people who don’t view politics with as much enthusiasm or

seriousness as I do, meaning that if I were to bring my level of enthusiasm to the topic that they

don’t care that much about, they might get annoyed or angry.

In essence, this chapter’s application seems to be that of understanding where you come

from, but also from where others come from as well. Being able to adapt to other’s customs and

traditions to live in harmony with those who you might not know perfectly well.
