CHAPTER 1
• Setting – La Paz, Mexico
• Houses signified the 2 classes in society:
rich & poor
• Inequality is evident (may hati yung sa
pagitan ng bahay)
o Brush houses – small, near the shore
- where Coyotito got stung by a
scorpion
o Town – stone houses, garden,
fountains, etc
- where the doctor stayed, he
turned down Kino
• Songs represented Kino’s instincts; also
affected the way he react to certain
situations
o Song of the Family – clear & soft;
Kino = calm state
o Song of the Evil – enemy; Kino is
tense, threatened
• Characters:
o Kino – young, strong, warm & fierce
eyes
- man of few words
o Juana – might seem gentle but strong
CHAPTER 2
• Tone:
o Despair – Coyotito was in pain
o Desperation – desperate to find a
pearl to pay the doctor
o Relieved/hopeful – they found a
pearl = can cure Coyotito
• Showed what kind of parents Kino and
Juana are
o Kino – will do anything for Coyotito;
sacrificial
o Juana – caring mother; religious
CHAPTER 3
• People attempted to steal Kino’s pearl
o Doctor – thought of Paris; suddenly
got interested in Kino
o Priest – would use it for the repairs
of the church
price possible
o Beggars – big amount of alms
• Kino saw reflections in the pearl (marriage,
new clothes, rifle, Coyotito’s education)
• Doctor went to Kino’s house to cure
Coyotito
• Music of the Pearl
o Kino – opportunity & hope
o Juana – evil & misfortune
o Other people – fortune
CHAPTER 4
• Stout man was playing with a coin
(legerdemain) confidently; when Kino
arrived, the coin disappeared
- represented the stout man’s nervousness
• Dealer told Kino the pearl was “fool’s
gold”; valueless
• Offered him 1000 pesos - Kino said he was
being cheated >:(
• Called 3 more pearl dealers
o 1st – no offer, 2nd – no offer, 3rd – 500
pesos
• When Kino left, stout man suddenly offered
15,000
• Presents discrimination & social injustice
• Fisherman = no knowledge on prices of
pearls = easy to fool
CHAPTER 5
• Kino – dynamic character
- from kind to violent and irrational
(Killed a man, punched Juana)
• Juana – static character
- being loyal and submissive throughout
the story despite Kino’s actions
CHAPTER 6
• Pearl was dull and ulcerous –
because of Kino’s actions, the pearl
became useless, Coyotito died
• Coyotito was shot because the
hunters thought he was a coyote
• Greed to keep the pearl led to
Coyotito’s death (consequence of
his actions)
