Dr. Aron Dellinger becomes WFO secretary general

T he WFO announced the appointment of Dr. Aron Dellinger

of Warsaw, Indiana, USA as the organization’s new secretary
general. Dr. Dellinger succeeds Dr. Lee W. Graber, who served in the
position from 2015 until this summer.
During the past year Dr. Dellinger has been
working with Dr. Graber to learn about the role and
functions of the secretary general, who serves on the
Executive Committee and is part of governance of
the organization along with WFO officers and fellow
EC members. The individual serving in the position
Dr. Aron Dellinger is responsible for operations of the organization,
including management of member services and finances, oversight
of member communications and events and coordination with the
AAO for WFO events at the AAO Annual Session.
“The WFO Executive Committee is eager to work with Dr. Dellinger
and we are delighted that he has accepted this position,” said WFO
President Dr. Nikhillesh R. Vaiid. “He has gotten up-to-speed very
quickly on WFO governance processes and business operations,
with a very smooth start to this transition.”
Dr. Dellinger is a past president of the Great Lakes Association of
Orthodontists (GLAO), a constituent organization of the American
Association of Orthodontists. He is a past member and chair of the
AAO Council on Communications and a past delegate from GLAO
to the AAO House of Delegates. In addition, he was a founding
volunteer and leader for the AAO Donated Orthodontic Services
(DOS) Program. He served on the DOS Board of Directors and as
its president until 2020, when the AAO Foundation integrated
the DOS program under its charitable management umbrella.

“The Brazilian Association of Orthodontics is sparing no effort in
making this a memorable in-person event,” says Dr. Flavia Artese,
chair of the 10th IOC and a member of the WFO Executive Committee.
“Our IOC motto is ‘Rio Embracing the World’, which was inspired by
the purpose of joining the orthodontic world together through this
unique meeting that happens every five years. This will be the first
time the IOC will be held in Latin America.”

Dr. Aron Dellinger… [ 1 ]

After receiving his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University
Dr. Dellinger attended the Indiana University School of Dentistry,
graduating in 1996. He completed the orthodontic residency program
training at the Saint Louis University (SLU) Center for Advanced
Dental Education.
A Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO),
Dr. Dellinger has served as an ABO examiner and as a question
preparer and editor for the current scenario-based exam. He
developed the MagneTainer magnetic retention device, for
which he holds a U.S. patent.
Dr. Dellinger has been married to his wife, Robin, for 30 years.
They have two adult children and reside on Winona Lake in
Warsaw, Indiana near his orthodontic practice, enjoying boating
and water sports. t

Dr. James Vaden receives WFO Regional Award

O rthodontic educator Dr. James Vaden received a WFO

Regional Award of Merit during the AAO/WFO Presidents’
Breakfast at the 2023 AAO Annual Session (April 21-24 in Chicago).
Dr. Vaden is the first North American AAO member to receive the
WFO award, which recognizes WFO members who make significant
contributions to orthodontics, whether through academics, research,
clinical practice or organized orthodontics.

Dr. Vaden joined the faculty of his alma mater, the University of
Tennessee orthodontic program, as a clinical professor in 1980.
From 1999 until 2010, while serving as chairman of the program,
he made the 600-mile round-trip commute from his home and
practice in eastern Tennessee to Memphis weekly.

Recognizing the program’s need for a modern clinical facility, Dr. James Vaden offers remarks after receiving the Regional Award, which

than $800,000 to support the clinic upgrade. The James L. Vaden
Orthodontic Clinic was completed and dedicated in 2013.
Now a part-time professor at UT, Dr. Vaden is the author of more
than 50 articles published in peer-reviewed orthodontic journals.
He has given more than 200 major lectures to national and
international groups.
In addition to his work at the University of Tennessee, Dr, Vaden has
been an integral member of the teaching faculty and administration
of the Charles H. Tweed International Foundation, providing clinical
treatment courses to countless residents and clinicians from around
the world. He currently serves the Foundation’s executive director.
Dr. Vaden’s recognition has been local, national and international
and has included the Louise Ada Jarabak Memorial International
Teachers and Research Award from the AAO Foundation, the
Albert H. Ketcham Memorial Award from the American Board of
Orthodontics, and the AAO James E. Brophy Distinguished Service
Award, which he received in 2016. In 2021, the AAO Foundation
established the James L. Vaden Teaching Fellowship Award in his
honor.
A past president of the American Board of Orthodontics, Dr. Vaden
is also a past Commission on Dental Accreditation commissioner
for orthodontics. He served as Doctors Scientific Program co-chair
of the 2017 and 2020 AAO Annual Sessions. t

Progress update: the world orthodontic educators list

D uring the AAO/WFO Presidents’ Breakfast, held during the

2023 AAO Annual Session in Chicago, WFO leaders released
the initial draft of the global list of recognized orthodontic educators.
A draft list of over 2,500 names has been compiled, with the
understanding that a good number of WFO affiliate societies have
yet to complete submissions of their rolls of qualified educators.

World Orthodontic Health Day observances emphasize the

orthodontist-patient relationship

S ince 2017, World Orthodontic Health Day has provided an excellent opportunity to spread the positive messages of orthodontic treatment
and interact with members of the public of all ages who would like to know more. The event is celebrated annually on May 15.

For the 2023 observance, the WFO introduced new resources to help engage the public in thought about the benefits of orthodontic treatment.
Following the 2023 World Orthodontic Health Day theme, “My Orthodontist and Me Smiling Together,” individuals and organizations
worldwide created many effective social media posts. Click here to view a video compilation of celebratory social media posts.

Affiliate organizations, university programs and individual orthodontists worldwide celebrated in a variety of ways.
Here are just a few examples:

e Korean Association of Orthodontists leaders and members
held an event to commemorate World Orthodontic Health Day,
a conference on the theme of “Improvement of oral health for
adolescents through orthodontic treatment”. In addition, KAO
provided information for the public on the benefits of orthodontic
treatment during growth, proper timing of orthodontic treatment
and how to find dental clinics with orthodontic specialists. The
KAO operates a system that makes it easy to find dental hospitals
and clinics with orthodontists via its official website.
e The Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics
from Narayana Dental College and Hospital Nellore in Andhra
Pradesh, India, conducted an awareness program for patients
of the department, also inviting dental educators and students.
Discussion included the importance of World Orthodontic
Health Day, patient education topics, motivational videos, a
question-and-answer period and finally, cake served to everyone.

e Dr. Firdous Ahmad Najar, an Indian Orthodontic Society member
working as a Dental Officer in Assam Rifles (a paramilitary force
in India), commands a dental hospital in district Tuensang,
Nagaland, India. This region is the most underdeveloped area
in northeastern India.

On World Orthodontic Health Day, Dr. Najar carried out an

extensive awareness campaign involving three schools: Govt.
Higher Secondary, Tuensang; St Jone’s Higher Secondary School,
Tuensang; and Assam Rifles High School, Tuensang. Three military
establishments were also included: No. 7 Dental Unit/Hospital
Assam Rifles, 28 Battalion AR and HQ 7 Sector AR.

In-person signing ceremony highlights new affiliate organizations
from Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Tunisia
L eaders of three new WFO affiliate organizations joined WFO
leaders at the 2023 AAO/WFO Presidents’ Breakfast at the
AAO Annual Session in April, where they signed memoranda
of understanding to make their WFO affiliation official.
Dr. Zouhair Abidine, president of the Moroccan Orthodontic
Society, Dr. Mohammed Murshed AlHarbi – president of the
Saudi Orthodontic Society, Dr. Anissa Zinelabidine – president of
the Tunisian Orthodontic Society, and some of their fellow regional
leaders joined Dr. Nikhillesh R. Vaiid, president of the WFO, for the
signing ceremony.

Members of the Moroccan Orthodontic Society have thus had two
exciting developments during the past year as the organization
celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2022.
The Saudi Orthodontic Society, as we reported in the last issue of the
Gazette, has a very strong commitment to excellence in orthodontic
education nationally within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and
internationally among the regions of Europe, Middle East and Africa.
Earlier this year the SOS organized its 17th Annual conference with
the Spanish Orthodontic Society, Sociedad Espanola De Ortodoncia
Y Ortopedia Dentofacial (SEDO), as this year’s guest of honor. The
meeting drew more than 350 attendees from various countries.
After signing the memorandum of understanding on behalf of the
Tunisian Orthodontic Society, Dr. Zinelabidine spoke of how the
organization expects to benefit from its WFO connection.
“By affiliating with the WFO, the Tunisian Orthodontic Society
can establish connections with orthodontic professionals and
organizations from around the world,” said Dr. Zinelabidine.
“This can facilitate knowledge sharing, research collaborations,
and advancements in the field of orthodontics. The WFO provides
educational opportunities, such as conferences, workshops, and
webinars, which can enhance the skills and expertise of orthodontists
in Tunisia. By participating in these activities, orthodontists can
stay updated on the latest research, techniques, and advancements
in the field, ultimately improving the quality of orthodontic care
provided in the country. We would like for orthodontists around
the world to know that Tunisia, despite being a small country,
is making significant progress in the field of orthodontics. The
specialty is advancing thanks to the concerted efforts of dedicated
professionals and the support of the healthcare system.”

announced during the 2023 AAO/WFO Presidents’ Breakfast

general Dr. Lee W. Graber, this annual award may be presented
to WFO Fellows who, in the judgment of the WFO, provide an
orthodontic related story that demonstrates a “changed life” because
of treatment for their orthodontic patient. Submissions include case
information from the orthodontist and a video in which the patient
shares their perspective.

Dr. Karazi’s patient presented as a complex case: A 19-year-old
female patient whose primary complaint was a deviated chin,
which had a negative impact on her self-esteem and functional
daily aspects such as speaking and eating.
“Problems included a Class III skeletal and dental relationship,
midline discrepancy, bilateral crossbite, and an edge-to-edge
sagittal dental relationship,” reported Dr. Karazi. “Due to the
patient’s chief complaint, the treatment plan included bimaxillary
surgery to establish ideal and dental relationship, correct midlines,
increase the overjet and resolve the menton deviation.” Digital
treatment planning helped produce precise outcomes.
In her video, the patient spoke about the challenges of recovering
from surgery but reported finding it easier to eat post-treatment
and feeling much better about the appearance of her smile. “I feel
confident about my beauty and the health of my smile and am very
grateful,” she said.

I n 2022, the WFO and the International Association of Pediatric

Dentistry (IAPD), which is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland,
began exploring possibilities for collaboration. The overall goal was
to determine possible benefits to pediatric patients worldwide who

“The potential of joining forces for global outreach to more than
117 WFO affiliate organizations and 78 national societies affiliated
with the IAPD was appreciated by both organizations,” said WFO
President Dr. Nikhillesh R. Vaiid. “The organizations established a
joint task force to develop a framework for cooperative initiatives.
We are delighted to announce that after a year of effort we received
approvals from both organizations’ boards of a memorandum of
understanding (MOU).”

The signing of the MOU took place during the 29th IAPD Congress,
which took place in June in Maastricht, The Netherlands. Dr. Vaiid
and IAPD President Dr. Figen Seymen signed the document.

Secretary General Dr. Ari Kupietzky, Dr. Seymen, and two past
IAPD presidents, Drs. Marcello Bonecher and Jorge Luis Castillo.

2023 T.M. Graber Award study focused on interventions for

controlling pain during orthodontic treatment

R esearchers from the University of Damascus Dental School

in Syria are the recipients of the 2023 WFO T.M. Graber
Outstanding Article Award.

Drs. Amer Owayda, Mohammad Hajeer, Rashad Murad, and

Rabab Al-Sabbagh are the authors of the award-winning paper,
“The Efficacy of Low-Level Laser Therapy Versus Paracetamol-
Caffeine in Controlling Orthodontic Separation Pain and Changes
in the Oral-Health-Related Quality of Life in Class I Malocclusions:
A 3-Arm, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial.” The
article was first published in the Journal of the World Federation
of Orthodontists (JWFO) in June 2022.

The award is named in honor of Dr. T. M. Graber, who was the
first editor of the WFO’s first official journal, the World Journal
of Orthodontics (WJO). The award recognizes Dr. Graber’s lifelong
contributions to the specialty of orthodontics and dentofacial
orthopedics through his endeavors as an academician and
researcher, his extensive scientific and clinical publications
and his responsibilities as editor.
The principal author of the award-winning article receives a
plaque, and the principal author and any co-authors receive an

EGYPTIAN ORTHODONTIC SOCIETY

The 35th Congress of the Egyptian Orthodontic Society took place January
26-28, 2023, in Luxor, Egypt. The congress was attended by renowned
orthodontists and researchers from Egypt and around the world. Luxor
was the capital city of ancient Egypt and hosts more than 50 percent of old
Egyptian antiquities.
The general assembly of the Society took place after the first day’s sessions
and featured election of the new Board members and a celebration to
sign an agreement for cooperation between the Egyptian Orthodontic
Society and the Saudi Orthodontic Society by the respective presidents,
Dr. Abbas Zaher (EOS) and Dr. Mohammed Mohammed (SOS).

The meeting featured five keynote lectures by prominent orthodontic
speakers from around the world: Dr. Ali Darendeliler from Australia, Dr. Ute
Schneider-Moser from Italy, Dr. Moschos Papadopoulos from Greece, Dr.
Waddah Sabouni from France and Dr. Nour Tarraf from Egypt/Australia.
There were also 26 oral presentations from speakers representing 14
different countries. Topics included advances in orthodontic technology,
clinical orthodontic procedures, and the use of digital technologies in
orthodontics.
Attendees also had options to enjoy tours to the most important local sites,
hot-air balloon rides to witness the sunrise and a trip in traditional feloukas
on the Nile. The congress Gala Dinner was organized in the premises of
the Luxor Temple, a breath-taking 4500-year-old temple. The program
included a Pharaonic show and awards ceremony to visiting speakers and
five attending presidents of orthodontic societies that have agreements
of cooperation with the EOS (Mexico, Greece, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and
Azerbeijan). t

ROMANIAN ASSOCIATION FOR EXCELLENCE

The 13th International Congress of the Romanian Association for Excellence

in Orthodontics (AREO) took place May 18-20, 2023, in a modern Congress
Center in the beautiful city of Targu Mures, Romania. AREO President
Dr. Irina Zetu, and the president of the Congress, Dr. Mariana Pacurar,
organized the meeting.

A mix of excellent international and national speakers addressed stimulating

topics ranging from 3D in orthodontics to early and interdisciplinary
treatment.

Committee, was delighted to be involved in the Opening Ceremony and
to greet all the participants on behalf of the WFO and its president,
Dr. Nikhillesh R. Vaiid, and to receive the significative certificate from
