Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the (Computer System Servicing(CSS) Grade-12) Self Learning Module

on (Configuring and Installing Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)) !
This Self Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by
educators from Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge
Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership
with the Local Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis
N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the
Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal,
social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

LESSON

UNDERSTANDING DYNAMIC HOST CONFIGURATION PROTOCOL (DHCP)

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a core infrastructure service on any

network that provides IP addressing and DNS server information to PC clients and
any other device. DHCP is used so that you do not have to statically assign IP
addresses to every device on your network and manage the issues that static IP
addressing can create. DHCP is a protocol used by DHCP servers in wired/wireless
IP networks to dynamically allocate a variety of network configuration data, such as
a user IP address, subnet mask, default gateway IP address, DNS server IP
address, lease time and so on, to client devices (DHCP clients). The DHCP protocol
enables DHCP clients to dynamically configure such network configuration data
without any manual setup process, which makes network management much
easier.

IP Address Allocation Procedure

 DORA (Discover, offer, Request, Acknowledgement)
o Client sends DHCP Discover to entire network
o Server send DHCP Offer (IP settings)
o Client Requests Offered Settings
o Server sends Acknowledgement
1. DHCP Discover
When a client (PC) is booted, it broadcasts a DHCP Discover message over the
Ethernet network to locate all available DHCP servers on the same subnet
network.
2. DHCP Offer
When a DHCP server receives the DHCP Discover message from the client, it
also broadcasts a DHCP Offer message over the Ethernet network (because the
client IP address has not been allocated yet), informing the client that it is
available. This message contains the network information, such as client IP
address, subnet mask, default gateway IP address, DNS IP address, IP lease
time and DHCP server IP address.
3. DHCP Request
The client, having received the DHCP Offer message, recognizes there is a DHCP
server available on the same subnet. Then it broadcasts a DHCP Request
message to the server over the Ethernet network, requesting network
configuration data including an IP address for itself.
4. DHCP Acknowledge
The DHCP server which received the DHCP Request message from the client
checks if the IP address shown in the DHCP Server Identifier field matches its
own. At this time, the DHCP server transfers all the network configuration data
including the client IP address – the same data sent along with the DHCP Offer
message - to the client. Then the client configures a network interface using the
transferred data, finally connecting to the Internet.
INSTALLING WINDOWS SERVER 2008 DHCP SERVER

You can use virtual machine application with Windows server 2008 R2 installed.
1. Click Add Roles from the Initial
Configuration Tasks Window or
From Server Manager / Roles /
Add Roles

If you do not have a static IP address assigned on your server, you will get a
warning that you should not install DHCP with a dynamic IP address. At this point,
you will begin being prompted for IP network information, scope information, and
DNS information. If you only want to install DHCP server with no configured scopes
or settings, you can just click Next through these questions and proceed with the
installation. On the other hand, you can optionally configure your DHCP Server
during this part of the installation.
3. To configure some basic IP
settings and configure the
first DHCP Scope. It was
shown the network
connection binding and
asked to verify it, like this:

4. The wizard is asking, “what
interface do you want to
provide DHCP services on?”
took the default and
clicked Next. Next, entered
Parent Domain, Primary
DNS Server, and Alternate
DNS Server and

In this example it opted NOT to use WINS on the network, clicked Next.
Then, it was promoted to configure a DHCP scope for the new DHCP Server. It had
opted to configure an IP address range of 192.168.1.50-100 to cover the 25+ PC
Clients on the local network.
5. Click Add to add a new
scope. Name Scope (Scope-
Name), configured
the starting and ending IP
addresses of 192.168.1.50-
192.168.1.100, subnet
mask of
255.255.255.0, default
gateway of
192.168.1.1, type of
subnet (wired),
and activated the scope.

While it cannot manage the DHCP Server scopes and clients from here, what it can
do is to manage what events, services, and resources are related to the DHCP
Server installation. Thus, this is a good place to go to check the status of the DHCP
Server and what events have happened around it. However, to really configure the
DHCP Server and see what clients have obtained IP addresses,
9. Go to the DHCP Server
MMC. To do this, go
to Start / Administrative
Tools / DHCP Server, like
this:

Figure 9: Starting the DHCP Server MMC

http://techgenix.com/content/wn/img/upl/image0181220369217336.jpg?ezimgfmt=rs:575x602/rscb2
10. When expanded out, the
MMC offers a lot of features.
Here is what it looks like:

Figure 10: The Windows Server 2008 DHCP Server MMC

http://techgenix.com/content/wn/img/upl/image0201220369217336.jpg?ezimgfmt=rs:531x426/rscb2
The DHCP Server MMC offers IPv4 & IPv6 DHCP Server info including all scopes,
pools, leases, reservations, scope options, and server options. If you go into the
address pool and the scope options, you can see that the configuration we made
when we installed the DHCP Server did, indeed, work.
11. The scope IP address range
is there, and so are the DNS
Server & default gateway.

HOW TO TEST WINDOWS SERVER 2008 DHCP SERVER
Type in system prompt: IPCONFIG /RELEASE then an IPCONFIG /RENEW and
verified that it received an IP address from the new DHCP server, as you can see
below:

DHCP CORE SERVICES

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a core infrastructure service on any

network that provides IP addressing and DNS server information to PC clients and
any other device. DHCP is used so that you do not have to statically assign IP
addresses to every device on your network and manage the issues that static IP
addressing can create.

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is an invaluable service when you

have a network larger than a handful of computers. It's also a standard component
of enterprise networks and sub networks. Microsoft Windows Server 2008's built-in
DHCP server allows Windows machines (and any other TCP/IP-based machines
and devices) to obtain their IP addresses and network settings automatically, which
can vastly simplify network configuration.
