EVERYDAY NUMBERS

Key

1. Warm up

10 mins.
This stage is to introduce the topic and personalise the language. Students, in pairs, discuss the questions. Go
through the questions first and highlight any unknown words.

2. Focus on keywords: numbers

10 mins.
This stage is to review the numbers one to twenty-five and from ten to one hundred. The students have to write
the number next to the correct word. When the students have finished, model and practise each number. Then,
ask the students to practise in pairs.
If you want to make this activity more interactive, you can give each student a word number. They have to talk to
each other to discover each other’s numbers and then organise themselves in numerical order.
Group 1:

a. 1 b. 23 c. 16 d. 6 e. 25 f. 100 g. 13 h. 2 i. 21 j. 3
Group 2:

a. 8 b. 4 c. 17 d. 24 e. 12 f. 19 g. 9 h. 11 i. 20 j. 27
Group 3:

a. 22 b. 15 c. 10 d. 14 e. 5 f. 30 g. 60 h. 90 i. 70 j. 40

3. Listening comprehension

10 mins.
This stage is for students to listen and identify numbers which sound similar. First, show them the numbers and
review and practise each one. Tell them to listen and circle which word they hear. Play it again if necessary.
You can read out a new sequence if your students need more practice.

✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓
30 40 15 60 17 80 90

4. Pronunciation: word stress

10 mins.
This stage is for students to notice the different stress patterns used for sets of numbers. First, elicit how many
syllables are in each word (two). Then ask the students to listen again and mark the stress on each number word.
During feedback, add the words to the board and mark the stress. Then practise pronunciation.
Teen numbers → stress on the second syllable (thirteen)
Tens → stress on the first syllable (thirty)
Answers: a) thirty; b) forty; c) fifteen; d) sixty; e) seventeen; f) eighty; g) ninety

EVERYDAY NUMBERS

5. Game: counting up

5 mins.
This stage is to practise the numbers in a quick speaking game. Tell the students that they are going to count
to twenty-five. If possible, ask them to stand in a circle. You start the counting and then guide the students to
complete the numbers to twenty-five. If a student does not know their number, encourage the next student to
say it. You can do the activity a few times, changing the direction so the students get a different number each
time.
Extension ideas:
You can count to one hundred.
You can also practise counting in tens from one to one hundred.
You can try counting backwards.

6. Focus on vocabulary: everyday numbers

5-10 mins.
This stage is to review frequent questions about numbers. The students complete the questions and answers with
one word from each column. During feedback elicit and highlight the following.
When we have a ‘0’ in telephone numbers we can say zero or ‘o’ /@U/
For dates of birth, we say ‘fourteenth, eleventh, nineteen eighty-five’ or ‘fourteen, eleven, nineteen eighty-five.’

1. → b. → ii. 2. → a. → iv. 3. → d. → iii. 4. → c. → i.

7. Listening for detail

10 mins.
This stage is for students to listen and identify numbers in an everyday context. First, show the students the form
and ask them what it is for. It is a request for the internet to be installed. They listen to a conversation and fill in
the gaps with the correct numbers. After you have played it once, ask the students to check their answers with
their partners and monitor their progress. Play again if needed. Add the answers to the board.

1. 10
2. 6
3. 2
4. 0 7 9 8 6 6 7 7 5 4 6

8. Speaking practice

15 mins.
This stage is for students to use the language in a productive task. First review personal information questions
about a third person. Put the following information on the board and then elicit the questions.
Name: Jim Eastern
Age: _______
Date of birth: _______
Address: _______
Postcode: _______
