• GENERAL CLASSIFICATION

TURTLE

Turtles are a group of prehistoric reptiles that appeared

when Dinosaurs were still living on earth. They are known

to be sluggish animals and indeed some tortoises are

quite slow. Although, some species such as sea turtles

tend to move faster, even on land. Land turtles are also

known as tortoises.
• DESCRIPTION

Turtles can be found in most parts of the world, except for
the coldest regions. Most of them are distributed from
southeastern North America to southeastern Asia. Most
turtles live in fresh water. Other species live in salt water or
on land. Turtles inhabit oceans, lakes, ponds, salt marshes,
rivers, forests and even deserts.

The size and appearance of turtles varies significantly between

different species. The smallest, for example the mud turtle, can be

less than 10cm long and weigh less than 0.5 kg. In contrast, the

Atlantis turtle can grow to over 2 m in length and weigh more than
860 kg.
Most turtles have a hard shell around their body, protecting their

vital organs like a body armor. The shell is separated into two parts,
a curved top called the carapace and a flat bottom called the

plastron. Most turtle species can retract their heads, legs and tails

into them for protection from predators. Although, some do not

have this ability.

sects, caterpillars, jellyfish, clams, lobsters and other crustaceans.
However, many tortoises are herbivores, eating only plants.
Some turtles are kept as pets by animal lovers, but people in several
areas of the world also consume their meat and eggs. In America,
for example, certain types of turtle species are harvested for sale to
restaurants. This practice has resulted in many native species, for
example the small turtle, many of which have been drastically
reduced. What's more, turtle populations have dwindled worldwide
since their environment was completely changed or destroyed.
Several species of turtles, including most tortoises and tortoises, are
in danger of being orphaned today.
