BMW M3 COMPETITION

Starting with the last generation of the BMW

3 Series, the coupé and the convertible of
the mid-range is referred to as the 4 Series.
Correspondingly, the coupé and convertible
version of the M3 presents itself as the
M4. However, the supply logic is different FRONT SIDE REAR
here. While the BMW M4 Coupé - like the
M3 - is available with rear-wheel drive and VS
manual transmission, the convertible is
offered exclusively with all-wheel drive and
automatic transmission. Another special BMW M4 COMPETITION
feature is available for the coupé. For the
first time in 20 years, BMW is offering a
CSL variant with a very strong focus on the
racetrack.

BMW M3 COMPETITION xDRIVE "The in-line 6-cylinder biturbo that gets under your skin perfectly
masters the change of pace between exhilarating torque and untamed
revving pleasure ..."

"BMW has managed both the wheel control and the control technology
impressively: The AWD's mechanical traction seems inexhaustible."

"It manages to drive, steer and thrill in as close a fashion to an M2

Competition as is possible to get from a car that’s both bigger and
heavier."

"The DKG gives way to a ZF8 automatic that shifts more smoothly (...)
but at the rev limiter, shift commands are implemented somewhat
delayed (...) The emotional hammering in of the gears? Passé."

"It’s a firm and relatively uncompromised sports saloon. Low speed

ride around town is harsh."

"Otherwise, the M3 pushes over the front axle earlier than before when
braking. The current model doesn't hide the increased front axle load
quite as well."
10 C O N C LU S IO N I N T E R N A L U S E O N LY

BMW M3 COMPETITION xDRIVE With the high-revving inline 6-cylinder biturbo engine, BMW impressively
underlines its engine building competence. The power unit offers high
torque, linear power delivery and a high level of emotionality.

The first BMW M3 with all-wheel drive combines the model's usual high
agility with high traction thanks to 2WD mode and thus with high driving
stability and optimum acceleration.

Thanks to the extensive stiffening measures, the M-specific suspension

and numerous adjustment options, the driving dynamics of the BMW M3
Competition are at a very high level.

BMW's switch from the previously used dual-clutch transmission to the

torque converter automatic transmission reduces the sportiness of the
drivetrain. The MCT 9G transmission used by AMG better combines suitability
for everyday use and sportiness.

The high driving dynamics of the BMW M3 Competition have to be paid

for by the occupants in everyday life with comparatively low comfort. The
BMW's spread between performance and comfort is less pronounced than
in the AMG.

The increased load on the front axle increases the tendency to understeer.
A balanced load distribution like in the AMG is missing here.

AUDI RS 4 AVANT
The Audi RS 4 can look back on a history of almost 20 years, during which the model has axle, which can actively distribute the drive power. When it comes to the suspension, the
regularly reinvented itself. While its predecessor still relied on a high-revving V8 engine, Audi uses a cross-wise hydraulic connection of the dampers to suppress pitching and
the current version of the RS 4 is powered by a 2.9-litre V6 biturbo - developed together rolling movements. The Dynamic ride control (DRC) system is just as unique in this class
with Porsche. In typical Audi fashion, power is distributed to all four wheels via quattro as the RS-typical expressive exterior with wide wheel arches.

AUDI RS 4 AVANT "Its standard all-wheel drive helps to generate speed from Newton
metres with little loss. Stepping on the gas without worrying? No
problem, the mechatronics skilfully implement it."

"We already know the RS sports suspension including 'Dynamic Ride

Control' from other RS models, which then also lie almost like the
proverbial board in fast corners."

"I also came to appreciate the solidly built and high-quality cabin, and
how premium the RS 4’s interior felt as a result."

"In 'Dynamic' mode, the exhaust is a bit too boisterous with loud
sputtering and the inter-throttle salvos. Fortunately, you don't hear
quite as much of this inside the RS 4 Avant."

"In regular Drive mode the transmission is eerily seamless, but the
thumps between rations in Sport or Manual modes feel artificial and
overemphasised."

"[As for its handling] the RS 4 starts to falter when pushed right to its
limit."
17 C O N C LU S IO N I N T E R N A L U S E O N LY

AUDI RS 4 AVANT The all-wheel drive of the Audi RS 4 combines high safety and traction with
an agility previously unknown in RS models. Especially in conjunction with
the sports differential, the Audi is very agile.

The innovative suspension system with adaptive damping and hydraulic

roll stabilisation gives the Audi very high driving dynamics, especially when
cornering at speed.

The Audi's 2.9-litre V6 engine impresses with high torque and low fuel
consumption suitable for everyday use.

As is typical of Audi, the RS 4 offers a high-quality interior and many comfort

options.

The Audi's 8-speed automatic transmission inhibits the RS 4 from realising

its full dynamic potential.

The sound of the RS 4 is artificially amplified, making it less emotional and

more distracting for a long-distance Avant.

In contrast to the C 63 E PERFORMANCE, many systems that help the Audi

achieve its high driving dynamics are only available as options.

As a pure combustion engine, the Audi has disadvantages compared to the E

PERFORMANCE hybrid powertrain in the C 63, both in terms of longitudinal
dynamics but also in terms of efficiency.
