Is artificial intelligence (AI) a threat to

humanity?
Today I will speak against it.

Fellow classmates, and fellow debaters, today we delve into the realm of artificial intelligence to
explore whether it poses a threat to humanity. While concerns regarding the potential risks of AI are
valid, I firmly contend that AI, when developed responsibly and ethically, is not an inherent threat to
humanity but rather a tool that holds remarkable promise.

Firstly, it's crucial to distinguish between science fiction exaggerations and the reality of AI's current
capabilities. The AI systems we interact with today are, for the most part, narrow AI designed to
excel in specific tasks. They lack self-awareness and autonomy beyond their programming. This
controlled nature of AI limits its capacity to independently cause harm.

Furthermore, the ongoing research in AI ethics and safety underscores our commitment to
responsible AI development. Ethical frameworks and regulations are being put in place to ensure
that AI systems prioritize human well-being. Just as we establish guidelines for any technology, we
can establish guidelines for AI that prevent it from becoming a threat.

AI's potential as a collaborative tool should not be understated. By working alongside humans, AI can
augment our abilities in fields such as medicine, science, and industry. Rather than replacing us, AI
enhances our problem-solving and decision-making capabilities, leading to more informed and
efficient outcomes.

In conclusion, the narrative that AI is an imminent threat to humanity can be refuted with evidence-
based reasoning. Responsible development, the absence of consciousness in AI, and the opportunity
for collaboration collectively diminish the notion of an inherent threat. Let us embrace AI's potential
while remaining vigilant in our pursuit of ethical and safe AI advancement. The real threat lies not in
AI itself, but in our failure to ensure its responsible integration into our society.
