SCHOOL SAFETY

August 31, 2023

Dear RSU #3 Parents and Guardians,

All the staff at RSU #3 are committed to providing a safe and nurturing learning environment for
all students. Our staff and students attend training through the ALICE model for responding to
school safety issues. Throughout the year school safety drills are conducted to practice the skills
necessary for optimal safety. In addition, school administrators follow district protocols and
procedures in handling any safety concerns; including threats of violence.

Unfortunately, as the school year begins we are faced with this fact head on. Yesterday, August
30th, a student made statements of violence against our schools. At approximately 6:30pm,
School Resource Officer Jordan Tozier was made aware of these statements. He, along with the
school administration responded promptly to this threat and began investigating. Due to the
timing, there were no students present. Out of an abundance of caution, Waldo County Sheriff
Department deputies and Maine State Police responded to assist to ensure our schools were safe.
There was no threat detected within our schools. Through the investigation it was determined that
the statements made by the juvenile were not credible.

This behavior is taken seriously and will be referred to the District Attorney for any further
action. School administration will follow policy for appropriate school discipline.

Again, RSU #3 is committed to the safety of all within our schools. We will continue to educate
our students and staff. We encourage everyone to adhere to the “See something, Say Something”
philosophy and report any safety concerns immediately to school staff.

If you have any questions, please contact your child’s school administrator.

Sincerely,

RSU #3 Administrative Team
