DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

CAM LAB EXERCISE

In groups of five students, carry out the following tasks;
 Illustrate using sketches and manual programming G-codes the difference between
drilling a hole and milling a hole in CNC milling machine, which tools are used for each
operation and under what circumstances would you prefer one over the other
 With an aid of sketches, differentiate between 3-axes, 5-axes and 8-axes CNC machines.
 Explain how you would zero the axes of a three axes CNC milling machine before
machining a component. Assume the billet is in form of a rectangular block
 Write CNC programs for milling the following profile 1 from a 20mm thick plate
assuming a 4mm diameter cutting tool, spindle speed of 800 rpm and a feed rate of
30mm/min. Each line of the program code must be accompanied by a description of the
operation.
Profile 1

 Write a CNC program to machine the following part on a CNC turning center running on
a Fanuc compatible program. Assume the material to be machined is mild steel and select
appropriate machining parameters.
