MODULE DESCRIPTION

• Module objective This module is designed to ensure participants are able to describe what NGEA is,
understand the benefits of using NGEA, and describe the different types of network
topologies. Lab exercises will be used for skill development and knowledge check.

• Competency statement At the completion of this module participants will be able to describe what NGEA is,
describe the benefits of using NGEA, and identify and describe NGEA network
topologies. Participants will be able to successfully complete the following
exercises:
• Lab 1: Identify CAN and Ethernet Nodes on an Electrical Schematic
• Post-Assessment

• Audience Level II field service personnel, resident mechanics, technical communicators, and
shop technicians. All participants should have a working knowledge of basic
electrical and hydraulic systems.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

• Visual presentation Given a visual presentation in the classroom of Module 4 Ethernet Data Link
Troubleshooing and Repair, participants will:
• Describe Next Generation Electronic Architecture (NGEA)
• Describe the benefits of using NGEA and ethernet
• Describe network topologies found on machines using ethernet

• Identify CAN and Ethernet Nodes Given reference material and the Lab 1 Worksheet, participants will be able to
on an Electrical Schematic identify CAN and Ethernet Nodes on an electrical schematic during the lab
exercise.

• Post-assessment Given a paper post-assessment, NGA and Machine Ethernet document, and class
notes, participants will identify/provide the correct answers with at least 80%
accuracy.

LAB EXERCISES INSTRUCTOR NOTE

The following section provides directions to set up, facilitate, and assist during lab
exercises.

Some lab exercises are the written-type with worksheets, while other labs are
the traditional “on the iron” labs. Answers are provided in this document for the
worksheet exercises.

The participant lab sheet(s), along with accompanying materials, are located in the
Participant Material PDF (included in the module PDF).

At the beginning of each lab, review the lab description.

NOTE: Discuss safety procedures with the participants for each lab (i.e.
safety glasses, clothing). Safely Home. Everyone. Every Day.™

LAB 1: IDENTIFY CAN AND ETHERNET NODES

ON AN ELECTRICAL SCHEMATIC

• Procedure • Explain the exercise

• Inform participants that they may refer to class notes while completing the
exercise
• Participants will use the Lab 1 Worksheet to document completion of task

• Materials needed • Lab 1 Worksheet

• UENR6217 320 and 320 CG Electrical Schematic

• Lab preparation Prior to conducting a lab exercise, perform the following steps:
• Review the lab exercise to ensure participants can demonstrate their ability to
accomplish the objectives

• Participant instructions Participants will use the NGEA and Machine Ethernet document, class notes, Lab 1
Worksheet, and the UENR6217 schematic, to identify CAN and Ethernet nodes on
an electrical schematic.
