Vincent Van Gogh
March 30, 1853 in Zundert, Netherlands
July 29, 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise, France

Vincent van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, in the

Netherlands, to a middle-class family. He was one of six
children, and his father was a minister. As a child, he was
serious and thoughtful, but he struggled with anxiety and
mental health issues throughout his life.

After a series of failed careers, including working as an

art dealer and a teacher, Van Gogh decided to pursue
his passion for art. He began painting seriously in his late
twenties, and quickly developed a unique style that was
characterized by bold, bright colors and thick, heavy
brushstrokes.

Despite creating over 2,000 works of art in just ten years,

Van Gogh only sold one painting during his lifetime. He
struggled with poverty and mental illness, and famously
cut off his own ear during a bout of severe depression.

Van Gogh moved to Arles, France in 1888, where the

bright sunlight and colors inspired some of his most
famous works, such as "The Yellow House" and "Starry
Night."

Van Gogh's mental health declined, and he admitted

himself to a mental asylum in Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in
1889, where he painted some of his most famous works,
including "Irises" and "The Starry Night."

IVan Gogh moved to Auvers-sur-Oise in 1890 where he

continued to paint and correspond with his brother, Theo.
However, plagued by health problems, he shot himself in
the chest on July 27th, 1890, and died two days later at
age 37. His brother, Theo died a year later in 1891, at the
age of only 33.

Despite not being famous in his lifetime, Van Gogh's work

has become widely celebrated and influential, making
him one of history's most important artists.
