Mystery of the Prophecy

1. What is the prophecy about the birth of Harry Potter?
- The prophecy about Harry’s birth tells us about the birth of someone who has the power to kill
the Dark Lord. The prophecy tells us about how Harry wields power to kill Voldemort and that
Harry and Voldemort are destined to kill each other, and only one of them will survive. It
explains how Voldemort chooses Harry as his equal in terms of power since he sees Harry same
as him. Harry’s lightning scar has also been explained; it means that Voldemort has already
attempted to kill Harry in the past and failed.

2. How did Harry dealt with it when he learned about it?

- Harry had a lot of questions and reflections about his prophecy. He also asked Dumbledore
about his prophecy and why didn’t anyone tell him about it, specifically Dumbledore himself.
Dumbledore explained his reasons behind keeping Harry’s prophecy a secret and didn’t mention
it to him. He said that he wants Harry to keep being happy because Harry has already suffered
enough from what he has experienced all these years. Dumbledore only wants Harry to lessen his
suffering and doesn’t want him to shoulder all the responsibilities and problems.

3. Knowing about the prophecy, did Harry change his plan of action? Explain
- When Harry was fighting Voldemort and the Death Eaters, he wasn’t aware of his prophecy yet,
and even the time he was being targeted by the ministry. He fought and carried everything on his
own. He even tried to avoid his friends, thinking he might only hurt them by letting them help
him. But when Voldemort fought Dumbledore, and Harry was also in the scene, he was caught by
Voldemort’s spell, which overrides Harry’s memories and thoughts. Voldemort uses Harry’s bad
memories of his friend and God Father dying because of helping him. Voldemort used this to
weaken Harry and make him lose his sanity. Unfortunately for him, Harry was able to realize
things about the actions he had been doing. He broke the spell of Voldemort and got his
consciousness back. And after this scene, Harry asks Dumbledore about his prophecy and why he
hid it. When Dumbledore explained why he kept Harry’s prophecy a secret from him and the
other people who didn’t tell Harry about his prophecy, Harry was able to understand
Dumbledore’s reasons. Dumbledore only wanted Harry to be happy and lessen the sufferings he
has been experiencing his whole life. When Harry realizes that he was approaching the things he
encounters wrongly and how he misinterpreted the sacrifices of his friend and family, he changes
his plan of action on how he will fight Voldemort since he said that he has what Voldemort
doesn’t have, the power to love and the relationship he has with his friends and family.

4. Compare Harry with Oedipus. How similar or different are they?

- In my opinion, Harry and Oedipus are the same and, at the same time, different. They both
have a prophecy that they are bound to fulfill. But Harry didn’t avoid his prophecy and tried to
fulfill it since it was for the greater good. At the same time, Oedipus tried to avoid his prophecy
since it was something immoral and outrageous. He wanted to save his father and keep his
mother safe from him. But unfortunately to Oedipus and Fortunately to Harry, their fate was
sealed, and they shall fulfill their prophecy. Harry’s fulfillment of his prophecy will result in a
good ending. While Oedipus fulfilling his prophecy will lead to no good and will only hurt the
people he loves.
