1. Introduction

1.1 Introduction
For operating the magnetic resonance imaging system safely and efficiently, careful
consideration is needed at the time of planning the installation of the system. The
AIRIS II system comprises a powerful permanent magnet and the electronic circuits
and computer system that must be protected from external noise and great care is
there for required regarding its power supply facility, grounding, radio frequency shielding
facility, etc. The layout of the system components should also be given consideration so
that the patient can be handled smoothly and comfortably, and for easy manipulation of the
equipment.
This installation planning guide describes what should be minded at the time of
installing the MRI system.

1.2 Check points for safety

1.2.1 Controlled access area
The area of which magnetic field strength is 0.5mT or more during MRI examination
and the installation of the system should be specified as a controlled access area. (In
the outside area of the controlled access area, the magnetic fringe field strength should
not exceed 0.5mT.) In the outside area of the controlled access area, electromagnetic
interference level should comply with IEC 60601-1-2: 2001. It is the responsibility of
the user to follow local statutory requirements with respect to access to the controlled
access area. Some countries enact the local statutory (labor standards) related to the
people engaged in medical services who access a controlled access area. The size and
shape is described as 0.5mT line in Chapter 17. After reading administrative
instructions in Chapter 13 carefully, the responsible staff should administer the
controlled access area not to allow unauthorized persons to enter into the area by
putting the tape on the 0.5mT line or putting the warning signs shown in Chapter 13
at all entries of the scan room. Magnetic materials such as an iron stretcher, a
vacuum sweeper and an iron container shall not be brought into a controlled access
area. These magnetic materials are attracted into the magnet and may injure the
patient or operator fatally or severely, or cause damage to the MRI system. Patients
with magnetic fragments being displaced inside the body or with implanted device
activated electrically, magnetically or mechanically (cardiac pacemaker, etc.) are not
allowed to access the controlled access area. The magnetic field caused by the MRI
equipment may adversely affect the implanted device. Check with metal detectors to
confirm that the patient and the operator do not have metal products. Magnetic
fringe fields or high-frequency magnetic fields of the MRI system may disturb
peripheral equipment such as the patient monitoring system, life supporting system
and emergency medical system, etc. The peripheral equipment may disturb the
proper functioning of the MRI system. Based on Section 7.3.3 and 7.3.5, the patient
monitoring window and the patient monitor should be installed and the audio visual
contact should not be limited for routine monitoring of the patient in the scan room by
using the Intercom function included as standard equipment of this MRI system.

3. Composition of MRI Rooms

3.1 Rooms Dimensions

Two rooms are needed for installing the MRI system. One is for the scan room, and the other
is for the operation room. The minimum room dimensions requirements and system
components installation are described in Table 3-1

Table 3-1 Dimensions of Rooms for MRI System

Width × Depth Height
Room System components
(meters) (meters)

Laser imager (option)

3.2 Conditions of Scan Room

(1) The installation site must be examined in advance and external electric field noise,
magnetic field fluctuation and vibration must be measured in advance.
(2) The room is to be shielded from electromagnetic waves for protecting inside from any
external noise (radio-frequency). For radio wave shielding facility, refer to Chapter 7.
(3) The magnetic field fluctuation caused by external factors (such as electric train and
large capacity power supply facility) should be limited within the following value.
If it exceeds the specified value, the magnetic field fluctuation compensation device
(option) is required.
Note that the magnetic field fluctuation compensation device has the adjustable limit.
It must be checked in the specification of the compensation device.
If the magnetic field fluctuation exceeds the adjustable limit, a special
countermeasure is required.
• DC magnetic field fluctuation : 1×10-7 tesla (0.1µT : 1mG)
• AC magnetic field fluctuation ×
: 1 10-7 tesla (0.1µT : 1mG)
If any horizontal magnetic field type MRI system is installed, install the permanent
magnet type MRI system so that 0.1mT line of the leakage magnetic field from the
horizontal field system does not interfere the permanent magnet gantry.
(4) It is necessary to set acceleration of vibration by external factors (large-sized trunk
road etc.) to 3 mG or less. In the case of 3 mG or more, quake-absorbing construction
etc. is required.
(5) Floor strength (Refer to Fig. A-2 on page 32.)
The floor strength must fully withstand the mass of the gantry as heavy as 11,200kg.
Floor load 29,420N/m2 : Ground floor made of concrete and base with
(Basic dimensions 3.0 × 2.5m) sufficient strength under concrete floor.

-3- SN-M198E
(6) Because the gantry is directly installed on the floor surface, the floor must be finished
as level and flat as possible (Refer to Fig. 3-1).

Fig.3-1 Floor levelness

(7) If any column made of magnetic material is used in the shielded room, install the
gantry at the position more than 700mm away from the column behind the gantry.
The gantry must also be positioned more than 400mm away from the column located
in the side direction from the gantry.
(8) Refer to Section 7.5 on for the cable pit.
(9) Scanning noise is extremely quiet as compared with that of the superconducting MRI
system, however, if leakage of the scanning noise to the operation room is still
obstructive, use soundproofing materials on the wall. Noise in the gantry can reach
about 100dB in the peak sound pressure level depending on the sequence.
(10) When an operating sound of the MRI unit placed in the operation room is
objectionable, take the following loudness reduction measures.
* Isolate the MRI unit by installing it in the panel (an exclusive air conditioner is
required in the panel, which needs an additional space).
* Install a sound-proof curtain around the MRI unit (an additional space required).

< CAUTION >

Make sure of enabling to check and operate the breaker and LED in the front lower
part of MRI unit.

-4- SN-M198E
3.3 Precautions for MRI Unit Arrangement
MRI unit and operation console are to be located 3.5 meters or more away from the center of
the gantry.

3.4 Functional test for the peripheral equipment

The electro magnetic interference level complies with IEC60601-1-2:2001.
The user or the manufacturer of the peripheral equipment can investigate/take measures
ofinfluence of the MR system on it according to the following protocals.

< CAUTION >

These tests are not intended for estimation of the possible effect of the
peripheralequipment on the resulting image quality of the MR system and no
guarantee that the peripheral equipment will function properly.

(1) Run scan with routine protocol

(2) Switch off the MR system
(3) Change the direction or the position of concerned equipment
(4) Move the concerned equipment to the distance away from the MR system
(5) Be sure the concerned equipment power is not shared with the MR power

6.3 Exclusive Grounding for AIRIS II System

(1) The grounding means equivalent to 100 Ω or less in grounding resistance needs to be
provided.
(2) The grounding conductor must be insulated not to be electrically connected to
surrounding structures.
(3) Make sure that the grounding wire shall be used independently by avoiding the use
with other general-purpose grounding wires.

6.4 Power Supply for Air-conditioner

Power supply should be provided for energizing the air conditioner to be selected for each of
the rooms (operating and scanning) by referring to the environmental conditions specified in
Table 5-1.
Make the air-conditioning for the imaging room 24-hour operation.

-7- SN-M198E

provided.

-8- SN-M198E
7. Installation of RF Shield (RF Shield)

7.1 RF Shield
(1) To acquire high quality MRI image, the RF shielding facility to protect the scan room
from external noise (radio wave) is required.
(2) Shielding specification
Limit electric field strength in the MRI scan room to 0.5 ~ 30MHz, 0dBµV/m or less.
(Standard shield: 60dB or more)
Note) For RF shielding work, refer to the compensating iron plate shown in Fig. A-2.
(3) The insulation resistance of the RF shield must be 500 Ω or more.
7.2 Standard Panel Type Shield
The specification of the standard panel type shield is shown below.
(1) Shield room work
The specification of the standard shield is 60dB or more for 5 ~ 30MHz.
However, if external radio wave noise is extremely strong and it cannot be eliminated
by the 60dB shield, the shielding must be reinforced. In such case, an extra estimate
will be submitted.
• Floor shield : Single shield with 0.03mm Cu foil 1
• Wall and ceiling shield : Aluminum-made panel type shield 1
(height: 2400mm)
• Patient monitoring window : 900(width) × 600mm(height) 1
Bottom height: FL+900mm
• Patient entrance door : 2000(width) × 2000mm(height) 1
• Operator entrance door : 900(width) × 2000mm(height) 1
• Shield for opening : Shield cover for air conditioning 1
Shield cover for air ventilation 1
Shield cover for smoke sensor 1
• Line filters for illumination and wall outlet 1

NOTE: 1) Ceiling height 2900mm is required to build the standard panel type shielding
room. If the ceiling height is less than 2900mm, contact Hitachi or our
authorized representative.
2) Scanning noise is extremely quiet as compared with that of the
superconductive MRI system, however, if leakage of the scanning noise to the
operation room is still obtrusive, use soundproofing materials on the wall.

-9- SN-M198E
(2) Facility works
(a) Air conditioning work
(For the customers in the very cold or warm country or region, special air
conditioning facility may be required, so detailed discussion will be necessary.)
(b) Illumination work
(c) Alarm lamp and smoke sensor installation work

7.3 RF Shield Facility

If RF shield facility other than the standard panel type shield is built, care must be exercised
for the followings. In such case, Hitachi or our authorized representative will be able to
render the service to build the customer-designed RF shield room.
7.3.1 Filter box
(1) The filter box for AIRIS II will be supplied by Hitachi, but its installation is to
be done by the executer of the RF shield facility work.
(2) The filter box for AIRIS II cannot be installed on the wall with a thickness
less than 44mm.
(3) The executer of the RF shield facility work is required to provide the line filter for
the illumination service outlet.
7.3.2 RF-shielding door
(1) Its installation position will be decided by discussion upon submission of the MRI
system layout drawing.
(2) As the double door is also used to carry in the magnet, its effective opening
dimensions must be 2000(width) × 1900(height) mm or more.
7.3.3 Monitoring window
(1) Its installation position will be decided by discussion upon submission of the MRI
system layout build.
(2) Its standard dimension is 900(width) × 600(height) mm, and its bottom height is
FL + 900mm.
(3) The monitoring window must be shielded.
7.3.4 Openings of air conditioning duct (outlet and inlet port)
(1) The installation positions of the outlet and inlet ports will be decided by
discussion upon submission of the MRI system layout drawing.
(2) The ports must be shielded.

- 10 - SN-M198E
7.3.5 Illumination apparatus and wall outlet in scan room
(1) The installation positions of the illumination apparatus and outlet will be decided
by discussion upon submission of the MRI system layout drawing.
(2) Use the tungsten lamps and make their illumination intensity about 200 lx
similar to that in the ordinary examination room.
(3) Do not use fluorescent lamp since it generates noise.
(4) Dimming system should be of separate switching type.
Since thyristor-controlled dimmer generates noise, do not use it.
(5) Cables must be connected via line filters for illumination and wall outlet provided
in the line filter box installed on the shield wall.
(6) Line filters for illumination and wall outlet are not supplied together with the
filter box for AIRIS II supplied from Hitachi. They must be provided by the
executer of the shield facility work.

7.3.6 Alarm lamp and smoke sensor

Their installation positions will be decided by discussion upon submission of the MRI
system layout drawing. They must be shielded.
7.3.7 Medical gas piping (for oxygen and vacuum suction)
(1) Their installation positions will be decided by discussion upon submission of the
MRI system layout drawing.
(2) The pipes passing through the RF shield wall must be made of electrically
nonconductive tube (such as Nylon, polyethylene, Teflon, etc.).
If metallic pipe is used, it will function as an antenna to induce external noise.
Therefore, do not use it.
(3) Insulate the pipes in the primary side from the RF shield room.
(4) Connect the insulation tube and cupper pipe with the fitting joint.
(5) If the works shown in (2) ~ (4) cannot be done, contact Hitachi or our authorized
representative.
7.3.8 TV and BGM
The TV system monitoring the patient in the scan room and BGM device used to relax
the patient must be shielded.

- 11 - SN-M198E
7.4 Filter Box
The filter box must be installed at the same time when the shielding work is carried out.
The filter box is comprised of the inner and outer blocks that are to be installed from the scan
room and operation room respectively.
The filter box can not be arranged for lateral.
(1) The filter box is supplied from Hitachi. The executer of the shielding work is required
to carry out its installation and shielding work.
When installing the filter box, be sure to fix it by putting the shilding wire net
(supplied as accessory of the filter box) in the box.
For detailed installation procedure, refer to Fig. 7-1.

(3) The filter box cannot be installed on the wall with a thickness less than 44mm.

NOTE: To protect cables, be sure to put the cable covers on the filter box in the scan room
side and operation room side after connecting cables to the filter box.
Because a size of the cable cover should be different depending on the installation
layout, the executer of the RF shield work is requested to prepare the cable cover.
The cable cover must be made of nonmagnetic material (such as cupper, alminum,
wood, SUS316, plastic material, etc.).

7.5 Cable Pit
To connect the cables between the scan room and operation room, the cable pit is required.
The cables include RF transmission/Reception cable (RF), power cable for gradient field (GC),
signal cable (SIG), power cable (POW) and grounding cable (GND).
To prevent deterioration of image and interference, the cables must be laid through the cable
pit split to the compartments as shown in Fig. 7-3. The cable pit must be shielded.
Especially, use nonmagnetic material (such as copper, aluminum, wood or SUS316) for the
cable pit in the scan room.

8. Air Conditioning Facility

(1) Build the air conditioning facility to meet the environmental conditions in the MRI
rooms (refer to Table 5-1). Do not install the outlet port of the air conditioning duct
above any of the gantry, operator console and MRI unit. Also avoid exposing the gantry
to direct air blow.
(2) Since the fringe of the leakage field is small, ordinary product (galvanized steel plate)
can be used as material for the air conditioning duct above the ceiling of the scan room
and other accessories.
(3) Operate the air conditioning facility for the MRI room (scan room) on 24-hour base.
Keep temperature in the scan room at 20 ~ 28°C even when the MRI system is not in
operation.
(4) The air conditioning facility in consideration of the heat dissipation shown in Table 5-1
as air conditioning requirements must be provided. However, do not use multiple air
conditioner. (Multiple air conditioner indicates one which operates multiple indoor
units connected with one outdoor unit and indicates air-conditioning facility which can
operate indoor units installed in multiple rooms only by a single outdoor unit.)
The multiple air conditioner cannot operate each of the indoor units independently (such
as simultaneous operation for room cooling and heating). Consequently, when the
air-conditioning facility is operated in hospital for room heating in winter, even if the
operation room becomes warmer by dissipation from the MRI unit, the operation room
cannot be cooled down. Therefore, be sure to provide an independent air conditioning
facility exclusive for the operation room and scan room (where the MRI unit is installed).

- 15 - SN-M198E
9. Other Works

9.1 Operation Room

(1) Do not use carpet to avoid static electricity and dust.
(2) Control illumination in a range from 0 to 300lux. If fluorescent lamp is used, use the
lamp that is provided with noise-free ON/OFF switch operation.
Use the noiseless dim control system.
(3) Noise level of the MRI unit during operation is about 65dBA. If noise of the MRI unit
installed in the operation room is obtrusive, install soundproofing panel or curtain
between the operator console and MRI unit.

9.2 Imaging room (Shield room)

Scanning noise is extremely quiet as compared with that of the superconductive MRI system,
however, if leakage of the scanning noise to the operation room is still obtrusive, use
soundproofing materials on the wall.

9.3 Warning lamp for operating and high magnetic field

(1) Install the warning lamp for “Operating” on the upper wall above the entrance door to
the scan room.
Because the cable from this warning lamp is connected to the MRI unit, prepare the
cable from the indicator lamp up to the position nearby the power distribution board or
MRI unit. (Note: The output is 100V AC.)
(2) Install the “High Magnetic Field” alarm lamp on the wall above the entrance door of the
preparation room or on the wall above the entrance door of the scan room if there is no
preparation room. (For operation on 24-hour basis.)

9.4 Fire precautions

Users are required to discuss with the local fire department about fire precautions to
establish the procedures to be taken in case of emergency.
Users are responsible to positively take a necessary action on its own initiative.

10. Carrying-in of System Equipment

10.1 Carry-in and installation of gantry unit

The works are required to be carried out by the transportation contractor.
(1) Place plywood plates (thickness: 9mm) on the carry-in passage and place steel plates
(thickness: 3.2mm or more) on them to protect the floor from damage.
(2) Lift up the gantry by using a jack and place chilled rollers under the gantry legs and
jack boss (rear side). (For jack-up position, refer to Fig. 10-2.)
(3) To move the gantry unit, drive in the anchor bolts (M24) in the carry-in passage and
floor of the shielding room. Screw an eyebolt (M24) in each anchor bolt. Using the
nylon sling, wire rope and winch as shown in Fig. 10-1, carry in the gantry unit.
(4) Using the special tools, change the direction of the chilled rollers at the corner of the
passage.

NOTE: 1) To lift up the gantry unit, use the eyebolts (M48) at 4 positions of the front and back
of the gantry unit, and do not use the transportation jig.
Also, use a lift-up nylon sling for the front side 200mm longer than the one for the
backside and lift up the gantry unit horizontally by keeping lifting balance. (Refer
to Fig. 10-1.)
2) Use the front and back bosses only to jack up the gantry unit and remove it when
carrying in the gantry unit.

11.2 Service area for MRI unit

A space of 800mm or more in total in the left-right direction and 800mm or more in total in
the front-back direction must be provided.

12. Cautions on System Use and Supervision
(1) The magnet installed in the scan room is powerful and attracts magnetic material. The
apparatus and instruments to be carried into the room should be non-magnetic in principle.
Especially, a patient carrying stretcher or other object which is large and possibly
approaches the magnet is dangerous as such may be attracted by the magnet. Discriminate
them from the standard furnishings by coloring or other means.

(2) The things which are difficult to make non-magnetic because of a structural reason (such as
a gas cylinder) must not be carried into the scan room.

(3) The hairpins, clips, fasteners, etc. (magnetic and electro-conductive material) that the
patient is wearing must be taken off before an MRI examination. A system to control the
process needs to be set up.

(4) General people must be prohibited from entering the scan room. Special attention should
be given to the possible abnormal performance of instrument and erroneous operation of
pacemaker due to the fringe magnetic field, and a preventive measure must be taken before
hand in this respect.

(5) A warning sign calling the attention of the hospital workers and patients entering the scan
room must be posted. Carrying a watch, credit card, etc., into the room may cause them to
be unusable. Example signs are shown in Fig. 12-1.

(6) Generally the attraction exerted on a magnetic material is felt in a magnetic field of 10 mT
or more. As may be seen from the fringe magnetic field distribution in the reference data
furnished separately, the AIRIS II system will have a magnetic field of more than 10mT
within an area 50 cm before the front and rear apertures of the gantry where the patient
table will be, and special care is needed in this respect.
