The Key Features pages can be used as a walk-around. Walk-arounds are intended to assist the salesperson when they
have the opportunity to make a presentation to a customer(s) with a real machine. Walk-arounds offer the well prepared
salesperson with a great opportunity to “sell” the features and benefits of the Komatsu dozer from the machine itself.
Using these printed features and benefits, start at the left hand corner of the blade and walk around the machine,
pointing out the items that you have selected to talk about.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES D31EX-22 vs. Deere 450J LT

Test Highlights
• Move More: During production testing, the D31EX-22 was 29% more productive and had 17.8% better overall efficiency
(material moved per fuel used). Deere is touting their lower fuel economy but their machine is considerably less productive
so at the end of the day the customer can get more work done with the Komatsu D31-22. If both machines were worked at
maximum load for 8 hours (not normal for this sized machine) the difference in fuel used would be less than 3 gallons!
• See More: The D31-22 had superior forward visibility, a 7 foot advantage, compared to the 450J. The unrivaled forward
visibility of the D31-22 maximizes the productivity of an operator. The D31-22 is more forgiving to new operators and allows
them to be more productive, faster. This Komatsu advantage is gained from placing the operator closer to the blade via a
mid-mount cab, incorporating a SuperSlant nose, and moving the coolers to the rear of the machine.

Demo Tips and Value Drivers

During a machine demo, make sure that the customer evaluates the following key value drivers of the D31-22. This will allow
you to demonstrate the value that is built into your product and build your customer’s confidence prior to operating the
machine.
1. Better Visibility: Have your customer adjust the seat the same on both dozers and do a quick comparison of how far the
customer can see in front of the blade using a construction cone or marking paint. State to the customer that this excellent
visibility helps operators be more productive by allowing them to adjust to changing ground conditions faster (less passes in
a day). During demos, dustier conditions are best! The Deere will kick up a large amount of dust in front of the machine,
reducing visibility. The Komatsu will blow the dust behind the machine since it has a rear mounted cooling fan.
2. Better Balance and Ride: This new machine layout, coupled with the viscous cab mounts provides a quiet and smooth
operating machine. Excellent gradeability of the D31EX-22 is the benefit for the customer. The D31EX-22 has more track
on ground than the prior -21A version so Deere is unable to use this against us as they have in the past.
3. Easier to Service: The Komatsu has much better access at ground level than the Deere. Point this out during a walk
around. Also, on the Komatsu D31-22 the operator does not need to crawl under the machine to change the oil. The Deere
450J requires the operator to crawl under and get dirty for that task. Now add in KOMTRAX with level 2+ functionality and
you have a valuable management tool for the owner. KOMTRAX’s integration with the machine’s onboard diagnostics allows
your service department to have a heads up on what parts or tools may be required on a service call which minimizes your
customer’s downtime. Sell this advantage!
4. More Durability: Steel castings, thick plate steel, solid one piece main frame are just a few of the items to point out
during a walkaround. Try and have your walkaround next to the Deere machine. This helps solidify your comparison in the
customer’s mind during a walkaround and helps prompt you to systematically work your way around the machine with the
customer. Deere touts their two sealed hydraulic tank system for HST and work equipment hydraulic systems. Advise the
customer the best way to avoid issues in the first place is to do all PM services per the O&M manual with Komatsu approved
filters and lubricants. The cooling system is designed to cool the oil to the proper temperature so Deere’s claims of “hotter
oil” are unfounded. The Komatsu may share the same hydraulic tank but the systems have separate high efficiency filters
and screens built in as added protection. The onboard diagnostics and KOMTRAX warn operators early of any filter
plugging issues. The KOMATSU hydraulic tank is not sealed like the Deere. It allows air to enter and exit through a new
breather filter that has 543% more filtering area than the -21A version minimizing oil contamination.

The D31EX has better forward visibility than the Deere 450J LT, a 7 foot advantage!

** Remember, when discussing visibility distance, that distance will differ due to the height of the operator. **
For example, when comparing a potential customer’s 450J to the D31 have them sit in both machines and use cones to
mark their visibility. In our testing we used a medium sized operator. A taller operator will have better visibility than our
testing results since their eye level will be higher in the cab. Make sure both machines have the seat adjusted to the same
position.
14 of 61 QUIT PREV NEXT MENU

Customers spend a majority of their time looking forward as compared to the other three directions. Having superior
forward visibility makes it easier for the operator to adjust to changing ground conditions faster. Therefore they are
more productive.
