B. DURING READING We will be viewing the video of a 27- year-old
newly minted lawyer from Singapore, who won
the Toastmasters World Championship of Public
Speaking.
Before that, let me give a short discussion of the
biography of the speaker and about the public
speaking competition.

While watching the video, kindly determine the


target audience and the objective/s of the speaker.
Please also take note of how the speaker delivers
his speech. What did he do to make his speech
interesting and sustain his audience attention?
And observe the speaker’s voice and intonation as
he delivers his speech.
C. POST-READING What should we observe in delivering a speech?

To fully comprehend on what did Darren Tay do in


winning the championship and in grabbing and
sustaining the attention of a large audience,
considerations in speech delivery must be given
attention.
1. Stress Pattern refers to the emphasis given on a
particular word or syllable which is pronounced
more forcefully.
2. Intonation is the rising and falling pitch of the
voice when somebody says a phrase or a sentence,
or it is the rising and falling pattern of voice.

3. Juncture refers to the break between one


spoken word and another, or the pronunciation
features that help recognize the break
distinguishing, e.g., between “gray day” and
“grade A.”
4. Tone of the voice is the general quality or
character as an indication of what the person is
feeling or thinking.

from the text or speech following proper stress (Students read the
pattern, intonation, juncture, and tone of the voice. following quotations)

1. “The way to deal with bully is not to hide or run,


the way to deal with bully is to OUTSMART and
OUTLAST.” It was like a light bulb in my mind
and “Bing”. I CAN DO THAT.

2.” The best way to deal with inner bully is not to


run or hide. You cannot run away from the bully
here. The best way to deal with it is to stand firm.

3. Face it and acknowledge its presence. When you


do so, you are no longer identifying with it. You
are stepping out and observing it. It’s like instead
of being out there in the storm.

4. I am in control because I am acknowledging it,


I am stepping out of it, observing it and watching it
weaken and fade.

5.. My friends, let’s all not run away from our


inner bullies anymore. Let us all face our inner
bullies and acknowledge its presence and fight.

GROUP ACTIVITY
I'll divide the class into three groups.
You are the tourism ambassadors of the
Philippines who are tasked to promote the best
features of the country and its overall positive
image to local and foreign visitors. Your task is to
prepare and deliver a three-minute speech in a
World Tourism Expo in Singapore to convince the
participants to visit the Philippines. Choose your
best speaker who will deliver the prepared speech
of the group.

(Use the Speech Delivery Rubric in evaluating the


performance of the students. Moreover, inform the
students about the performance indicators.)
