BRIGADA PAGBASA 2021

DOÑA SALUD ANNEX PROJECT GROW

I. INTRODUCTION
Reading is the process of receiving or taking in the sense of letters or symbols. It is important for a variety of reasons. However, understanding what
is being read is one of the crucial language skills in English compared to other macro skills. Through reading we can get more information, knowledge,
enjoyment and solving a problem from what see in symbol and text.
Reading extends individuals’ experience giving them a glimpse of the world’s excitement, pleasure and wisdom (Caliwag, 2014). This is essential in
the formation of learners who are expected to be Maka-Diyos, Makatao, Maka-kalikasan, at Makabansa and will be the country’s partners in building a
great nation.
In connection with the Spotlight, Doña Salud teachers headed by our school head initiated the Program GROW which means “Get a book, Read from
your heart, Open your mind and, Welcome new learnings!” Dona Salud teachers came up in that program title because many secondary learners
especially the grade – seven are having difficulty in reading even a single basivword. We cannot deny the fact, that learning to read is not such easy thing.
As we observe, there are many problems that influence the process of learning to read, and the very main reason to it, is that students do not have
interest in reading. That is why reading coordinators of English and Filipino prepared some reading materials and, with the observance of proper healthy
protocol, did home visitations to assess learner’s capability in reading.
The goal of this program is to instill love for reading and to make the struggling readers to be proficient ones.
