Syllabus
In Process Mass Transfer, students will learn the fundamental theory and introductory practical applications of
separation processes. The fundamental theory they will study includes molecular diffusion, convective mass
transfer, interphase mass transfer, the two-film model, film and overall mass transfer coefficients and vapour-
liquid equilibrium. Mass transfer theory is used to design and analyse unit operations for separation processes.
These include flash and continuous distillation, gas absorption and stripping, solvent extraction, solid leaching and
humidification. The methods used to study the unit operations are material balances for stage and continuous
contact processes, McCabe-Thiele design methods, and packed tower design.
Introduction
Many unit operations in chemical process industry are related to separation processes. Some mixtures can be
separated by purely mechanical technique. But there are many other mixtures, such as gas and liquid mixtures (or
solutions) which can’t be separated by mechanical technique. The separation of such mixture requires the use of
either externally supplied agent or input of energy. The separation processes of this kind are based on the
principles of mass transfer and have traditionally been called mass transfer operations. This unit includes
fundamental principles and their application to commonly used mass transfer operations in process industry. The
objective of this unit is to develop theoretical and practical knowledge of mass transfer operations applicable to
the separation processes.
Tuition pattern:
l Lectures - 2 per week. They will be a mixture of content delivery and classroom problems. This component
will be delivered through online Blackboard Collaborate sessions. These sessions will be recorded and the
recordings will be available to students.
l Workshops - 1 per week. A batch of students working on a number of focussed mass transfer problems in
a tutorial style environment with discussion elements. This component will be delivered in face-to-face
mode.
l Laboratories - A batch of students performing laboratory experiments. This component will be
delivered face-to-face. More details wil be provided during the semester. Laboratory schedule and
grouping will be provided at the beginning of the semester through Blackboard annoucements.
It is important to note that in addition to the weekly classes, all students have the opportunity to contact the unit
coordinator (UC) or teaching staff for additional consultation. The staffs will be available for both online and face-
to-face consultation. The consultation time will be announced on Blackboard.

Learning Activities
All students in this unit are expected to participate in weekly learning activities, whether they are face-to-face or
online. This unit includes three learning activities - lectures, workshops and laboratory experiments. For online
content simply go to Blackboard to attend the live sessions or access recordings as appropriate. Each week there
is an expectation that you will arrive in a face-to-face or online class having completed any previous assigned
work.

1. Lab report:
l Each group must submit a lab report for the first two experiments.
l Each student in a group must explain his/her individual contribution on the first page of a lab report.
l Lab report weightage is 15% towards your final grade. Out of 15%, 5% marks will be for individual
participation and engagement during the lab sessions and 10% will be for the group report.
l More details on the format of a lab report will be announced on Blackboard.
l For submission, a Turnitin link will be provided on Blackboard. Exact due date for individual group
will be announced on Blackboard.
Lab presentation:
l Each group must submit and give a PowerPoint presentation for any one of the last two
experiments.
l Lab presentation weightage is 15% towards your final grade. 5% will be for individual participation
and engagement during the lab sessions, and 10% will be for the group presentation.
l More details on the format of lab presentation will be announced on Blackboard.
l Submit your presentation directly to Blackboard through a Turnitin link provided on Blackboard.
Exact due date/time for individual group will be announced on Blackboard. Note that online pre-lab
activities are available for each lab experiment. It is compulsory for each student to complete these pre-lab
activities before you conduct experiments.

l This will be a closed-book IRIS-invigilated mid-semester test conducted using BB eTest platform.
l Its date and time will be announced on Blackboard.
l It will have questions from the syllabus covered in Chapter-1-Introduction to mass transfer
operations, Chapter-2-Molecular diffusion, Chapter-3-Convective mass transfer, Chapter-4-Interface
mass transfer and Chapter-5-Vapour liquid equilibrium.

l This will be a closed-book IRIS-invigilated exam, which is worth 50% of your final grade.
l It will be conducted by using BB eTest platform.
l Its format, date and time will be annouced on Blackboard.
l It will have questions from the syllabus covered in Chapter-6-Distillation, Chapter-7-Absorption and
stripping, Chapter-8-Liquid-liquid extraction and leaching and Chapter-9-Humidication.
Pass requirements
Each student must achieve a final score of 50 or greater to pass this unit.

Late assessment
Where the submission of a late assessment is permitted, late penalties will be consistently applied in this unit.
Where a late assessment is permitted for an assessment item or the entirety of the unit (refer to the Assessment
Schedule table in this Unit Outline) and the student does not have an approved assessment extension:
1. For assessment items submitted within the first 24 hours after the due date/time, students will be penalised
by a deduction of 5% of the total marks allocated for the assessment task;
2. For each additional 24 hour period commenced an additional penalty of 10% of the total marks allocated
for the assessment item will be deducted; and
3. Assessment items submitted more than 168 hours late (7 calendar days) will receive a mark of zero.
Where late assessment is NOT permitted for an assessment item or the entirety of the unit (refer to the
Assessment Schedule table in this Unit Outline) and the student does not have an approved assessment extension:
1. All assessment items submitted after the due date/time will receive a mark of zero.
Assessment extension
Where an application for an assessment extension is permitted for an assessment item(s) within this unit (refer to
the Assessment Schedule table in this Unit Outline):
1. A student who is unable to complete an assessment item by/on the due date/time as a result of exceptional
circumstances beyond the student’s control, may apply for an assessment extension on the Assessment
Extension Application Form as prescribed by the Academic Registrar. The form is available on the Forms
page at https://students.curtin.edu.au/essentials/forms-documents/forms/ and also within the student's
OASIS (My Studies tab – Quick Forms) account.
2. The student will be expected to submit their application for an Assessment Extension with supporting
documentation via the online form.
3. Timely submission of this information supports the assessment process. For applications that are declined,
delayed submission may have significant ramifications on the possible marks awarded.
4. An application may be accepted up to five working days after the due date/time of the assessment item
where the student is able to provide a verifiable explanation as to why they were not able to submit the
application prior to the assessment due date/time
Where an application for an assessment extension is NOT permitted for an assessment item(s) within this unit
(refer to the Assessment Schedule table in this Unit Outline):
1. All assessment items submitted after the due date/time will be subject to late penalties or receive a mark of
zero depending on the unit permitting late assessment submissions.
