ABSTRACT

The rapid advancement of technology has created new opportunities to enhance

educational processes and address challenges faced by the Potia Elementray students in the
realm of reading and audio-visual comprehension. This research explores the development
and evaluation of the LanguErn Sims application, designed as an innovative tool to support
students in their journey towards improved comprehension skills. The application utilizes
interactive simulations, multimedia resources, and gamification techniques to engage
students in immersive learning experiences. Through a user-friendly interface, students are
presented with a diverse range of reading materials and audio-visual content tailored to
their academic level, Dep-Ed MELCS, and subject of interest. The application also
incorporates comprehension exercises and assessments that dynamically adapt to individual
learning needs, fostering personalized learning pathways for each student. Quantitative and
qualitative data were collected, including pre- and post-tests, surveys, and user feedback, to
measure the effectiveness of the application on students' reading and audio-visual
comprehension skills. The findings of this research indicate that the LanguErn Sims
application positively influences the respondents' comprehension abilities. Participants
demonstrated significant acceptability in terms of Grammar, Vocabulary, Readability,
Usefulness, and Suitability for the learners.
Moreover, the application was highly regarded by students for its engaging and
interactive nature, which enhanced their motivation and enjoyment of the learning process.
The implications of this research are significant for educators, curriculum designers, and
educational technology developers. The application offers a promising approach to
supplement traditional teaching methods and promote autonomous learning in the digital
age. By integrating simulations, multimedia resources, and personalized assessments, the
application can effectively address the individual needs of students especially the grade 7
of Potia Elementary School in fostering a deeper understanding of complex concepts and
facilitating independent learning.

INTRODUCTION
In today's society, reading increases a person's level of certainty. It gives people
the ability to think creatively and fundamentally in a world that is constantly changing
and very competitive. It gives quick, prepared access to new data and information that
will help with deep rooted learning (Bautista, 2019). In order for students to comprehend
and learn from a variety of texts, it is essential that they acquire strong reading
comprehension skills.
Word recognition, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension are all subskills of
reading comprehension, which is a complicated process. Word recognition is regarded as
the foundation of reading among these subskills, the National Reading Panel (2000, as
cited in Macatangay, 2018; Tasic et al., 2020) defined Word.
Recognition, "the ability to identify and read printed words accurately and
fluently." Since it is important for readers to precisely perceive and disentangle words
to understand the significance of a message, this principal expertise is fundamental for
the improvement of understanding cognizance.
As what concluded in the study of Ersoy and Papatga (2018), people have
reading comprehension skills that they can use at any time, not just in school. Also,
they can use those skills in any class, not just ones in their mother tongue. All aspects
of our lives, including work, school, social interaction, day-to-day life, and enjoyment,
require the ability to read and comprehend written material. Students gain a better
understanding of how society operates and its nature
LanguErn Sims Application: An Aide to the Students’ Reading and Audio-Visual Comprehension

as a whole as a result of the majority of information being presented through text (Suson et al.,
2020). So, it is far unrealistic to exaggerate the meaning of fathoming the idea of strong
understanding direction (Ankrum et al., 2017).
The Marungko Approach is one of the main methods that has recently gained
popularity in the Philippines. Dr. Josefina R. Cortes came up with this method to teach reading
in the Philippines in a systematic and comprehensive manner. To assist students in accurately
recognizing and decoding words, the Marungko Approach places an emphasis on phonemic
awareness and phonics instruction (Cortes, 2018). The method is based on the idea that
students can only become proficient readers with a solid understanding of word recognition.
The Marungko Approach has been shown to improve Filipino students' reading
comprehension in a number of studies. The Marungko Approach had a significant impact on
the reading performance of students in the first grade, according to a Jocson (2020) study. In a
similar vein, a study conducted by Macatangay (2018) found that students in Grade 4 who used
the Marungko Approach were able to improve their reading comprehension abilities.
The Marungko Approach was found to be effective in enhancing students' phonological
awareness and word recognition abilities in a further study by Tiongco and Yap, (2019). The
study also found that the method or approach was effective in increasing students' reading
revenue and satisfaction. The Approach was

2
LanguErn Sims Application: An Aide to the Students’ Reading and Audio-Visual Comprehension

thought by the researchers to be a viable teaching method for further developing students'
comprehension skills, particularly in the early stages of reading acquisition.
Based on the requirements and learning styles of the students, the researchers
cconclude that the both Marungko and Phonetics aproaches could be effective in teaching
methods for further developing the understanding abilities of those students.
Additionally, it has been demonstrated that the use of technology in education has a
positive effect on student learning (Lynch, 2018), and its use has increased in recent years.
Students can practice and improve their skills in fun and interactive ways thanks to
technology.
As a result, the rapid development of learning technologies in higher education is
credited with the realization that learning technologies can support and innovate teaching
(Fernández-Ferrer & Cano, 2016) and enhance various forms of assessments (Farrell &
Rushby, 2016). It is a common belief that technology enhances learning and that students
need to learn how to use technology in order to be productive members of society. According
to Davies and West (2014), teachers must teach their students how to use technology and how
to use educational technologies effectively in the classroom in order to provide a high-quality
education.
In addition, when technology is utilized in the classroom, it is anticipated that students
will have a greater interest in their subjects. For instance, gamification, virtual field

3
LanguErn Sims Application: An Aide to the Students’ Reading and Audio-Visual Comprehension

trips, and other online learning resources are all ways technology enhances learning enjoyment.
In addition, technology has the capability of encouraging a greater level of active participation
in the learning process, which can be difficult in a conventional lecture setting (Bailey, 2021).
Additionally, research demonstrates that teachers can benefit from professional development
opportunities offered by technology to improve the quality of instruction (Levin & Wadmany,
2018; 2013 Mends-Brew; 2015, Peters; Ruhizan and others, 2014). To put it another way,
education should incorporate technology.
Consequently, numerous strategies for developing and assessing reading and
audio-visual comprehension have been implemented in the country to address the
aforementioned issues among students; however, the researchers observed and discovered that
the majority of students continue to struggle, affecting the students' overall learning progress.
As a result, the researchers developed a stimulating and interactive LanguErn Sims
application that included a simulator for exercises, speech sounds, literature, and vocabulary.
A technological tool designed to improve students' reading and audio- visual
comprehension is the LanguErn Sims application. Students will be able to participate in a
simulated reading and audio-visual experience thanks to the application, which was
developed in accordance with the Marungko Approach.
The LanguErn Sims application has a number of features that will help students improve their
reading and audio-visual comprehension. First, students can practice word recognition,
decoding, and comprehension skills through the application's interactive and engaging reading
activities. Second, the application gives students access to audiovisual content that helps them
improve their vocabulary and comprehension. Thirdly, the application provides students with
immediate feedback, allowing them to track their progress and make necessary adjustments to
their reading skills.
Finally, the application was created and furnished considering the cognitive capacity and
problem of the learners, and the curriculum as well as according to the study of Cheung, A.
C., & Slavin, R. E. (2016) on the impact of educational technology applications on student
reading outcomes, it was found out that curriculum-aligned interventions have a positive
impact on student reading outcomes, suggesting that integrating digital instructional materials
with curriculum can be effective in enhancing students' educational skills. Moreover, the
increased availability of computers and mobile devices, the application can also be used
everywhere for the students to access anytime as it was posited by Kunkel (2015) that the use
of educational technology can effectively be used at home as supplemental mediation or in
classrooms as an integral component of the core curriculum. In addition, the learning process
is more student-centered which is aligned in the K-12 curriculum as well as the study of Xie
et. al. (2018) that the use of educational technology is less objective and fixed, with more
room for the learner to create their own knowledge as opposed to passively absorbing it.

Overall, the application will cater the needs of the learners in enhancing and improving their
audio-visual comprehension. Tasic et al., (2020) conducted a study found that the application
helped elementary school students in Serbia improve their reading comprehension skills. In a
similar vein, a study conducted in 2020 by Bautista and Cervantes found that the application
helped Filipino first-graders improve their reading comprehension abilities.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The research anchored the framework of the study on the study of Blanka and Katrina
(2020) on the Use of Mobile Applications in Developing Reading Comprehension in SLA
where they have found out that reading

comprehension has improved as a result of using mobile applications. In addition, several

research have discovered that adopting mobile aps results in improved learner motivation and
a positive attitude.

6
LanguErn Sims Application: An Aide to the Students’ Reading and Audio-Visual Comprehension

Reading comprehension is a crucial aspect that includes students’ skill in analyzing and
expertise of a given text. It exceedingly assesses the studying capacity of inexperienced
persons and their aptitude to understand a text.
Also, research has shown that students' comprehension of learning is hampered by a
lack of vocabulary. (Semtin & Maniam, 2018). It is proposed that teachers have to search for
academic games and strategies to contain their students in the use of the creative expression
inside the enhancement of vocabulary know-how (Hashemi, 2021).
Educational games have been utilized in educational contexts for lots decades
(Pekalongan, et al., 2019). Educational games and mainly gamification can be adopted to help
the development of students’ motivational, cognitive, emotional, and social angle (Licorish, et
al., 2018).
Kahoot! Game is one of the improvements in gaining knowledge of technology. It can
facilitate and encourage the students for being lively and on the way to understand the content
material of the text (Marsa, et al., 2021).
Wang (2015) described that Kahoot! Is called a game-based scholar response system
that modifies the lecture room environment to be more fun and engaging like a game show.
Wang and Tahir (2020) explained that Kahoot! Game has 3 functions, it increases students’
engagement, motivation, enjoyment, and attention to develop their learning technique in the
class. Kahoot! Game can be used to train abilities and increase learning results. Whereas,

7
LanguErn Sims Application: An Aide to the Students’ Reading and Audio-Visual Comprehension

Wang (2015b) defined that in growing the students’ engagement, the playful and colorful
graphics and audio is used by Kahoot! It means that the audio and colorful pix in Kahoot!
are able to supply motivation to the students all through playing the game.
Furthermore, Kahoot! Game can be used for developing interesting quizzes,
discussions, and surveys in coaching analyzing comprehension fulfillment. So, the lecturers
can use this game in the classroom and make learning extra exciting and fun. Additionally,
Iona (2017) Explained that Kahoot! Has 4 kinds: Survey, Discussion, Quiz and Jumble.
In a study of the usage of Kahoot! to enhance analyzing comprehension of English as
a foreign language rookie, it turned out that Kahoot! Game has a totally high effect on
engagement, belief and motivation, and positive attitude in teaching analyzing
comprehension fulfillment. Therefore, it could be concluded that the use of Kahoot! Game
with excessive engagement, notion, motivation, and effective mindset of the scholars can
have an impact on their reading comprehension fulfilment (Marsa, et al., 2021).
Moreover, vocabulary acquisition for students is seemed as one of the
hardest components of mastering the language. However, vocabulary is considered one of the
sub-capabilities of the language (Orfan, 2020). On the other hand, word recognition is one of
the comprehension processing competencies encapsulated through the interactive
technique training. Word recognition abilities permit readers to understand the meaning of
comprehension passages by means of

8
LanguErn Sims Application: An Aide to the Students’ Reading and Audio-Visual Comprehension

decoding the sound of new phrases (Anyiendah et al., 2021).

Additionally, Literature has a tremendous impact as a coaching useful resource on the
students’ process since it enables them to develop their analysing competencies (Calderón &
Molina, 2021). Learning English through literature may additionally grow students’ critical
questioning and creativity. Khatib (2018) argues that “literature is a great medium for critical
questioning enhancement among language rookies.
Using literary texts as a teaching tool has a positive impact at the scholar’s English as a
Second Language process. They get easily involved within the analyzing comprehension
interest and are keen to understand greater about the

9
LanguErn Sims Application: An Aide to the Students’ Reading and Audio-Visual Comprehension

tradition and historic context wherein the textual content is set. Therefore, not only their
motivation is stepped forward but also their know-how on a specific subject matter. Through
activities which lead them to examine the textual content deeply, they raise their critical
questioning (Calderón & Molina, 2021). This way, they exercise and improve their reading
comprehension.
On the game-based totally utility, we have included vocabulary inside the content
material together with speech sounds, a record of our inputs. We utilized literature such as
song, short story, and poem originally crafted by the team with the purpose of contextualizing
the material. We also included amusing games consisting of quizzes and crossword puzzle
that will help engage the students in learning.

RESULTS

I. Acceptability Rate of Languern Sims Application

The charts below reveals the result of the acceptability rate towards the LanguErn Sims
Application among the students in terms of grammar, readability, vocabulary, usefulness and
suitability for learners among students.

GRAMMAR

6%
ACCEPTABLE
SLIGHTLY ACCEPTABLE
SLIGHTLY UNACCEPTABLE
UNACCEPTABLE

94%

It appears that the accurate imposition of grammar is acceptable with a number of 33 and a

high rate of 94.3%. This only means that the researchers are keen enough to keep the prototype

from grammatical errors. On the other hand, 2 of the respondents said that the application is

slightly acceptable with a rate of 5.7%. This only means that some of the respondents are critical

enough to spot that there are still errors in terms of sentence structure. Hence, the prototype met

one of its purpose, as grammar is highly accepted by the respondents, this only validates that the

design can be a great help to aid the students’ reading and audio-visual comprehension. This

backs by Rajabali (2016) on his study, “Effects of Grammar Software on Reading

Comprehension”, which the results showed that the use of grammar software significantly
1
6
LanguErn Sims Application: An Aide to the Students’ Reading and Audio-Visual Comprehension

improved the reading comprehension of the learners.

READABILITY

17% 20% ACCEPTABLE

SLIGHTLY ACCEPTABLE
SLIGHTLY UNACCEPTABLE
UNACCEPTABLE

63%

It shows that the font size of text used in the application is only slightly acceptable with a

number of 22 and a rate of 63%. The researchers used 10-points in displaying the content of the

application. This only means that the researchers are not cautious enough with the technical.

While, 7 of the respondents said that the application is acceptable with a rate of 20%, 6 of the

respondents voted slightly unacceptable with a rate of 17%. These data shows that one/fourth of

the respondents are torn between labeling readability as acceptable and slightly unacceptable.

This will help the researchers improve the design and make the font bigger for the learners.

Since majority of the respondents rated readability as “slightly acceptable”, this only

authenticates that the design can be a help to aid the students’ reading and audio-visual

comprehension. As what stated in “Legibility and Readability of Small Text on Liquid Crystal

display (LCD)” by Lund, (2017) which the results suggested that font sizes below 8 points are

difficult to read on LCD’s, and that 10-12 points is the optimal font size for good readability

which will help the visual comprehension of the learners.

1

LanguErn Sims Application: An Aide to the Students’ Reading and Audio-Visual Comprehension

VOCABULARY

6%
ACCEPTABLE
SLIGHTLY ACCEPTABLE
43% SLIGHTLY UNACCEPTABLE
UNACCEPTABLE

51%

It illustrates that the precise usage of vocabulary is slightly accepted with a number of 18

and a rate of 51%. This only impose that the vocabularies used in the design satisfied the

respondents. In addition, 15 of the respondents rated it with acceptability of 43%, and 2 of the

respondents labeled the application as slightly unacceptable in terms of vocabulary.

With these data, the prototype validated one of its purposes, as vocabulary was rated as

slightly accepted by the respondents, this only affirms that the application can still be of help to

aid the students’ reading comprehension. This corroborates the study of Huang Peng (2021), “A

Review of Vocabulary Acquisition through Mobile-Assisted Language Learning”, which the

findings exhibited that various types of application such as flashcards, games, and multimedia

materials, can effectively promote vocabulary acquisition in line with reading comprehension

among learners. Still, the application will surely aid the students’ reading comprehension with the

help of vocabulary feature.

1

LanguErn Sims Application: An Aide to the Students’ Reading and Audio-Visual Comprehension

USEFULNESS

9% 3%
ACCEPTABLE
SLIGHTLY ACCEPTABLE
SLIGHTLY UNACCEPTABLE
46%
UNACCEPTABLE

43%

It demonstrates that the application’s usefulness is acceptable with a number 16 and a rate

of 46%. The researchers encourage the learners to copy the application on their mobile phones or

laptops. While, 15 of the respondents said that the application is slightly acceptable with a rate of

43%, 3 of the respondents voted slightly unacceptable with a rate of 8%. On the other hand, 1

respondent rated the application as unacceptable with a rate of 8%. These statistics show that

while majority of the respondents saw the usefulness of the prototype, unfortunately, there are

still not convince in the app’s usefulness. When the latter were asked, some of them said that they

do not have the means to install the application like mobile phone, memory space, and

incompatibility. Thus, casting the application as useless.

However, this did not hinder the researchers to see situations with a silver lining,

considering those who rated the app as acceptable and slightly acceptable. This only certifies that

the prototype is useful enough to aid the students’ reading and audio-visual comprehension,

which preceded by the study of Lomicka Lord (2017), “Evaluating the Usefulness of a Mobile

Application for Comprehension Development” which the conclusions displayed that such useful

application is effective in improving the learners’ comprehension in reading, visual, and auditory.

1
9
LanguErn Sims Application: An Aide to the Students’ Reading and Audio-Visual Comprehension

SUITABILITY

9% 3%
ACCEPTABLE
SLIGHTLY ACCEPTABLE
SLIGHTLY UNACCEPTABLE
UNACCEPTABLE

89%

It affirms that the application’s suitability to learners is greatly accepted with 88% which

was rated by 31 respondents. It was seconded by slightly acceptable with 3 respondents and a 9%

rate. However, 1 respondent labeled the app as slightly unacceptable with a rate of 3%. The

researchers took these data with great satisfaction. This means that the whole package of the

prototype equates the purpose of the study, which the researchers set the app as primarily

designed for the learners.

Furthermore, the researchers designed the application considering DEP-ED MELCS,

learners’ competencies, and other factors that could help the students in assimilating what is

intended for them to acquire. These considerations affected the impact of the app to the learners,

reasons as to why they acknowledge it with a high rate. This only verifies that the design can be a

great aid to the students’ reading and audio-visual comprehension. As what indicated by Barbara

Viberg (2015) on her study, “The Suitability of Language-Learning Application: A Meta

Analysis” which found that such characteristic of an application can be useful development of the

learners’ reading & audio-visual comprehension.

II. Challenges Encountered by the Respondents while Using the Application

2
0
LanguErn Sims Application: An Aide to the Students’ Reading and Audio-Visual Comprehension

1. The words are complicated.

“The questions are difficult. A lot of words have deep meanings which is
hard to understand especially because we are only in grade 7. My advice is to
use simple words that align with the students capacity. It’s not helpful to use
highfalutin words if the students can’t understand.”

Audio-visual materials help learners enrich their vocabularies and

enhance comprehension through encountering complex words that they never
get to encounter in their learning. It also offers information that students may not
be able to experience in traditional teaching approaches.
(LISBNETWORK,2023)
After the pilot testing, most of the students’ answers are the used of
advanced vocabularies which most of the students are not familiar with. Their
encounter of the new words is one of the reasons why most of them got low
scores since they do not know the definition even with their spelling. It denotes
that the words presented are not suitable to the level of knowledge of the grade 7
students which backed by the study of Sadeq Ali Saad (2013) on his study
“Using Audio-Visual Aids and Computer-Assisted Language Instruction (CALI)
to Overcome Learning Difficulties of Vocabulary in Students of Special Needs”
which examines the capability of young children to comprehend language
vocabularies and says that learners’ performance on reading comprehension
depends upon what vocabulary they could understand in the texts they read.
Some of the students suggested using simple words for them to be able to
understand the presented quizzes and stories. With this, the audio-visual is
effective since students had already came across to new words and they were
able to hear its pronunciation and understand its definition after the quizzes give
to them.

2. The words and sounds are not simultaneous

2
1
LanguErn Sims Application: An Aide to the Students’ Reading and Audio-Visual Comprehension

“The words projected is not simultaneous with the audio playing. The latter would sometimes
behind, and vice versa.”

Students’ observation was the non-simultaneous presentation of the sounds and

words which affected their understanding. It causes them total confusion since students are
baffled whether to just listen to the sounds or to read the words projected on the screen. In
consequence, students barely followed the given activities and yielded unsatisfied results
from the pilot testing.
Students’ observation was the non-simultaneous presentation of the sounds and
words, which affected their understanding. Choi, Greer, and Keohane (2015) emphasized
the relevance of an application's simultaneous flow of words and sounds in order for the
audience to respond to the instruction. Asynchronous sound is the dominant form of
educational computer-mediated communication (CMC) (Johnson & Aragon, Citation
2013). It occurs in a delayed manner without simultaneous access to educational
outcomes. It causes students total confusion since they are baffled about whether to just
listen to the sounds or read the words projected on the screen. In consequence, students
barely followed the given activities and yielded unsatisfactory results. It is now safe to say
that they were attentive all throughout since they observed the technical issues which is a
good sign that their attention was fixated. If it was done like the traditional way, I doubt
students would even lay their eyes on us and listen but since it is an audio-visual aid, this
easily got their attention and interest.

3. The words and letters are not readable.

The problem is the words is difficult to read because of the background and also the font
size of the words and letters are small.

Font size and backdrop color are vital in any presentation to allow the audience to read
and understand the content. Font size, blank space, text line spacing, paragraph styles, line
length, and word length are all elements that can impair or increase the ability to read text on
an application or computer screen (Ferrari & Short, 2018). This shows how effectively the
text is aesthetically arranged and how easily the text can be understood. Text should be
exceedingly clear in order for a wide range of readers to understand it. During the pilot
testing, the words and letters displayed were unintelligible due to the font size used and the
extremely bright background, which clashed with the text itself. According to (Ambrose &

2
2
LanguErn Sims Application: An Aide to the Students’ Reading and Audio-Visual Comprehension

Harris, 2015), text readability on displays is required to guarantee successful engagement in

learning. Furthermore, readability is related to text elements and arrangement, which
influence meaning interpretation. Students then proposed raising the text size as well as the
background to assist them focus on the information and participate in the various activities.
4. The sound is inaudible

“The application is okay, the presentation is well organized however, the sounds and
music is not loud enough. It’s hard to understand what does it mean. Amplify the sounds.”
Sounds give students with additional enjoyment while also supporting them in learning the
correct pronunciation of words. Sounds are also crucial, especially when playing a song or telling
a tale, and during the pilot testing, students noticed that the sound of the given activities was not
loud enough for them, despite the fact that they were 35 in the class. Some of them suggested
utilizing larger and louder speakers so that they could enjoy listening to the songs, and stories,
and, most importantly, know the right pronunciation of the vocabulary, which would greatly aid
them in learning.

Thus, if the application's audio is of poor quality, learners may struggle to understand and
improve their pronunciation, which can ultimately lead to the rejection of the application. As what
stated in DolphinAttack: Inaudible Voice Commands (Guoming Zhang, et al., 2017) due to the
miniature package sizes and low power consumption of a portable mini speaker, the sound
generated for attacks are inaudible to a large number of people. So to avoid this problem,
researchers may use larger speaker that can emit good quality of sound.
