Learnings from Crayon Industry:

1) Quality Control : Initially different types of coloring tools have been in place that resemble
modern day crayons. It was a complicated process for artists to heat the color and then use the
brush on it. It evolved later to a product that is a mixture of charcoal and oil. And various artists
and professionals had been experimenting with their own formulas when they came up with
wax as one of the critical ingredients. At one point they had to discontinue the use of carbon
black as ingredient as it was toxic. Modern crayons had to go through a thousand years of
evolution to be safe and artist friendly and at the same time cheaper to produce.
2) Innovation: The industry has made some drastic innovations based on the need of the market.
Each pigment has a different cooling time, so the mixing of pigments to achieved the desired
color and automating the process of packing different color crayons in a single pack in just the
right time takes several layers of design thinking materializing into practice. Other similar
products that we have seen in the market are :
Scented Crayons: These crayons have a variety of wonderful aromas, including
strawberry, apple, and orange, which gives colouring a more rich sensory experience.
Multi-Colored Crayons : These crayons come in a variety of shades that can be blended
to create new hues and tones.
Personalized Crayons : These crayons can be custom-made with the child's name or
initials, making them a unique and personalized gift.
Some companies often focus on eco-friendly or natural crayons, such as those made
from beeswax or soy wax, which have gained popularity in recent years due to the
increasing awareness of environmental issues.
3) Market: India has a large population of children, and the demand for crayons and other art
supplies is high. The market is expected to grow at a steady rate in the coming years, driven by
factors such as increasing disposable income, rising education levels, and a growing focus on art
and creative activities. The Indian crayon industry is dominated by a few major players, such as
Faber-Castell, Camlin, and Kokuyo Camlin. These companies offer a wide range of crayons,
including standard wax crayons, oil pastels, and watercolor crayons, as well as various innovative
products such as scented crayons and twistable crayons.
Apart from the major players, there are also many smaller companies that offer specialized
products and cater to niche markets. The Indian crayon market is primarily driven by the
education sector, with schools and educational institutions being the major buyers of crayons.
However, the market is also driven by retail sales, as parents and caregivers purchase crayons
and other art supplies for their children at home. In addition, the market for crayons is also
driven by the growing demand for adult coloring books, which has led to an increase in the sales
of high-quality and artist-grade crayons.
4) Cost Management : The Sales flow of Crayons , all through the manufacturer, distributor,
wholesaler and retailer have a considerable profit to price ratio. And to remain profitable,
efficient supply chain management and production processes play a key role in reducing costs.
