GENERIC NAME: MENTHOL-ZINC OXIDE
BRAND NAME: Calmoseptine, Leader Multi-Purpose Moisture Barrier Ointment, Risamine, Zinc-Oxyde
Plus, Zinc-Oxyde Plus, Zinc-Oxyde Plus
DRUG CLASSIFICATION: Skin Emollients & Protectants; Dermatological
MECHANISM OF ACTION: acts as a barrier to protects skin from moisture and irritating substances. This barrier
function also helps protect the skin from drying out. In addition, it has ingredients that
help to draw moisture away from too moist or inflamed areas. Thus, it helps to maintain
a healthy moisture balance for your skin.
INDICATIONS: To prevent and heal skin irritation caused by urine, diarrhea, sweat, fistula damage,
feeding tube site leakage, wound drainage, minor burns, cuts, scrapes, or itching.
SUGGESTED DOSE: Cleanse skin gently with mild skin cleanser. Allow to air dry. Apply a thin layer of
ointment on the affected skin area 2 to 4 times daily or with each diaper change, at
bedtime, or when prolonged exposure to wet diapers to promote comfort and long-
lasting protection.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

& SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS: should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity or allergy to any
of its ingredients.

Should not be put on open or deep wounds, animal bites, infections, or very bad
burns or cuts.

Discontinue if the condition worsens or symptoms do not improve within 7


days.
For external use only

SIDE EFFECTS: Redness, warmth, or irritation at the application site may occur.
ADVERSE SIDE EFFECTS: Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in
your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing.
Blistering/swelling at the application site, increased/unusual pain at the application site.
DRUG INTERACTION: has no noted serious interactions with any other drugs.
NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assess for allergies before the application of medication.
Rationale: to avoid their allergy triggers and eliminates the chances of an overreaction.
2. Assess for the skin integrity before administration of topical medication.
Rationale: medication should not be used in open and deep wounds.
3. Wash hands with soap and water before and after using the medicine.
Rationale: washing your hands with plain soap and water removes germs, including antibiotic-resistant germs.
Keeping your hands clean can prevent the spread of germs, reducing the risk for infections.
4. Clean the affected area with mild soap and water.
Rationale: reduce the risk of infection and encourage the healing process.
5. Apply a thin film of the medication to the affected area and gently rub in as directed. Use gloves during the application.
Rationale: to maintain sterility and proper administration of the medication.
6. Use this medicine 2 to 4 times daily, or as directed.
Rationale: use this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or
do not use it for a longer time than your doctor ordered to prevent further complications.
7. Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
Rationale: to ensure they work as they should as well as prevent further damages or complications.
8. Inform the client that the medication is for external use only (skin).
Rationale: to ensure that they will only use it where it should be applied.
9. Instruct client to avoid getting this medication in their eyes, nose, or mouth. If they do get the medication in those
areas, flush with plenty of water.
Rationale: In order to prevent irritation or burn, it is best to inform them of what to do and what to avoid in such
situations.
10. Instruct client to report if symptoms do not improve within 7 days, or if they become worse, then they must check
with their doctor.
Rationale: to provide another treatment and avoid further complication from using the medication.
