OFFICE FIRE RISK ASSESSMENT CHECKLIST


The mores yeses you can tick, the more it is likely that your fire precaution measures will
protect your employees and visitors in the event of an actual fire.

Do you have a written fire risk assessment?
Was it carried out by a competent fire assessor?
Has it been reviewed in the last year?
Have you shared the findings with your staff?
2. Prevention
Have you identified possible sources of ignition (e.g. electrical equipment,
smoking, arson)?
Have you taken action to minimise the risk of these starting a fire?
Is your fixed electrical system tested every 5 years?
Do you have a testing regime for portable electrical equipment?
Do you minimise the amount of cardboard, paper and other combustible
materials in the workplace?
Do you ban the use of highly flammable solvents (safer alternatives are
available)?
Do you have a ‘clear desk’ policy (all papers to be put away at the end of each
day)?
Do you have secure access (limited to authorised people)?
3. Emergency Procedures
Are there signs showing people what they need to do in the case of fire?
Do you have a fire plan showing escape routes?
Do you have an alarm that’s tested weekly and audible to all?
Are fire exits clearly signed?
Are all fire exit routes kept clear?
Do they lead to a safe place (designated assembly point)?
If you have anyone with special needs (e.g. unable to hear alarm or who
would need help in an emergency) have you drawn up a Personal Emergency
Evacuation Plan (PEEP) in consultation with that person?
Have you appointed at least one fire warden?
Do you have emergency lighting should the mains power fail?
Do you have fire extinguishers and people trained to use them?
Is all fire equipment (extinguishers, alarm, emergency lighting) regularly
checked and serviced?
4. Training and Records
Have you had a fire drill in the last year (or as set out in your fire risk
