KINDS OF PHRASES
1. Infinitive Phrase
- is a verb form consisting of to and the base form of the verb
- it may be an infinitive with modifiers or a complement. All acting together as a
single part of speech.
2. Gerund Phrase
- a verb form ending in -ing that functions as a noun. It functions as a subject,
an appositive, subjective complement, direct object, and object of the
preposition.
3. Prepositional Phrase
- made up of a preposition and a noun
Ex: He slept under the tree.
They gathered near the library.
We will visit her after the meeting.
4. Participial Phrase
- a phrase which begins with a participle and includes the words that complete its
meaning. It is used to describe a noun.
- It should be as close as possible to the noun it describes.
- Forms: present participle (ending in -ing) form or past participle (ending in –d, -
ed, -en, or -ent
Ex: The instructor, speaking slowly, explained the use of the gadget.
The esteemed poet, honored by the award, expressed his thanks.
Opening in the late afternoon or early evening, the creamy, white flowers
grow on drooping branches.
Pruned regularly, the Pink Shower can be a real showpiece.
5. Appositive Phrase
-a noun or pronoun placed after another noun or pronoun to identify, rename or
explain the preceding word.
