THE HOLY SPIRIT (THE PERSON OF THE

HOLY SPIRIT)

The holy spirit also known as the spirit of God and a one out of the three personality of God, is

the means by which God display his power through men as we can see in the bible, the holy

spirit took part in the creation(Gen 1:20), the holy spirit also played an important role in the

manifestation of our lord Jesus Christ on earth(matt 1:18-20). Without the holy spirit in a person

the power of God cannot be made manifest on earth. That was why even when Jesus walked on

earth he didn’t display the power of God until the holy spirit descended upon him. In one word

the holy spirit is the power of God in a third personality. (matt 3:16-17)

Attributes of the holy spirit.

As I have said previously the holy spirit is the means by which God displays his power through

men, this is one of the main significant of the holy spirit. But that is not the only thing the holy

spirit does in a person. When the holy spirit comes to dwell in a man, he begins to work on the

person from the inside, he transforms the person from the inside before the manifestation begin

to appear physically. The holy spirit is responsible for the conviction of a man, there are many

refrence in the bible where the holy spirit comes upon men and begin to manifest the power of

God through them. We can see in (acts 2:1-5) that is was after the holy spirit came upon them

that they began to speak in different tongues. The holy spirit is responsible for the building of

men, he walks with them, guide them, direct them, and help them gain stature on earth.( job

32:7-8)
 The holy spirit is also responsible for instilling the gifts if the spirit in men, and also the

fruits of the spirit. We can see the fruits of the spirit listed in galatians (5:22-23) of which are

love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance. When a

person has the holy spirit at work in them, they begin to display this attributes in their daily

lives. The gifts of the spirit also include miracles, prophesy, healing, wisdom, speaking in

tongues, discerning of spirit, interpretation of tongues. It is when the holy spirit is at work in the

life of a man that he/she begin to manifests this gifts in their life. The holy spirit helps manifests

the will and purpose of God on earth. The holy spirit have played a significant role in the

manifestation of the will of God and the Christian faith on earth. The holy spirit was with Jesus

through his walk on earth.

The holy spirit in the old testament

Some preachers think that the holy spirit is limited to the new testament but actually, he is

active as much in the old testament. The holy spirit have been active on earth right from the

time of adam(Gen 2:7) the word breath there translated in Hebrew means spirit. It was after

God put on adam the spirit of life that he became a living soul . the holy spirit therefore took

part in the creation of man.

The holy spirit also played a role in the old testament in the prophesy of Isiah the servant of the

lord(Isaiah 42:1-9). This passage summarizes the three persons of the trinity in the salvation of

the lost, thus it ties together the remarkable harmony of the old testament and the new testament

in understanding God’s grace and shedding a light to our understanding of the holy spirit it

makes us understand how the life of a person is when the holy spirit is upon him of her.
I will be listing some roles of the holy spirit in the old testament right from the time of creation

1. The holy spirit participated in creation(Genesis 1:2; job 26:13),

2. The holy spirit gives life to humanity and other creatures(psalm 104:20-30;Gen 2:7) like I

have said ealier, the word breath of life there means spirit of life, and can only be granted

by the holy spirit. In (psalm 104:30 part A) is says “thou sent forth thy spirit and they are

created.

3. The holy spirit also strives with men in the old testament(Genesis 6:3) but left because of

the sin of men

4. The holy spirit also came upon certain judges, prophets, and warriors in the bible that

made them manifest extraordinary power. For example we can see in it manifest in

Joshua(numbers 27:18), we also see it manifest in othniel (judges 3:10). We see is

manifest in gideon(judges 6:34). We see it manifest in Samson(judges 13:25;judges

14:6). We see it manifest in saul(1 samuel 10:9-10). However the holy spirit left saul

because of his disobedience (1 samuel 16:14)

5. The holy spirit played a prominent role in the old testament prophesy. The psalmist

declared that “the spirit of the lord spoke by me and his word was on my tongue. And

there on we see a some of prophesy the psalmist made about our lord Jesus Christ (psalm

118:22; acts 4:11) we also see him talking about the crucification in (psalm 22:16-18)

which was made manifest in (matthew 28:27-35). We also see the holy spirit manifest in

ezikel (ezikel 2:2). Another evidence that the spirit of God was with the psalmist can be

found in (psalm 51:11) where he said “cast me not away from thy presence oh lord, take

not thy holy spirit from me” this was after he had sinned and was asking God for mercy
 and telling God not to take the holy spirit from him because of his sin. meaning the holy

spirit had been with him

6. The holy spirit inspired holiness in the old testament believers(psalm 143:10) and the

scripture promised that someday God would put his spirit in his people in a way that

would cause them to live according to his status (ezikel 36:27) which was made manifest.

7. The spirit was crucial in helping God’s people anticipate the ministry of the messiah. We

see that in (Isiah 11:2) this passage was talking about our messiah. Then we see in the

new testament when Jesus was claiming to fulfil this prophesy (Isaiah 61:1-2;luke 4 18-

21)

The holy spirit with the un regenerated man

first of all what do we mean by the un regenerated man ?

the un regenerated man simply means the man that haven’t known Christ, the unsaved man.

While the regenerated man is the man that has known and received Christ into his/her life.

Therefore, an un regenerated man despite having all sort of gifts and talents does not have the

holy spirit in him and wont be able to manifest dimensions of the spirit. The un regenerated man

is the man that does not know the person of God, and despite being shown the holy trinity of

God still forsake the wisdom and knowledge of God, proclaiming to be wise whereby they

become fools.(rom 1:19-21) the bible uses a lot of words to describe the un regenerated

man(roman 1:28-31) such as unrighteousness, fornicators, backbiters, haters of God, despiteful,

inventors of evil, full of envy, murder e. t. c……….

We can see that the regenerated man was manifesting all this before salvation. But when a man

is safe, he begin to manifest the gifts and fruits of the spirit. Being and un regenerated man does

not just entails not knowing God alone for God has made himself known, but it also entails

rejecting God ways. Now what the holy spirit does with the un regenerated man is bringing

conviction to him and bringing him to the light of the word of God. Now how does the holy

spirit bring conviction to sinners? We will be looking ar some examples in the scripture.

Firstly I want us to understand that it is not an overwhelming burden of guilt put upon us

miraculously as some believer might say it is, rather it is an overwhelming burden of guilt that

comes through the message of the light of the bible inspired by the holy spirit(acts 2:37-38;acts

10:44). The message of the writers was not conjured by their own, rather it was inspired by the

holy spirit through them. And as we can see in (john 16:7-11), we see in verse 8 he said ”and

whe he comes he will prove to the people of the world that they are wrong about sin and about

what is right and about God’s judgement.” It is clearly stated here that the holy spirit work here

is to convict the un regenerated man of his un righteousness and this can only be done by the

light of the word of God. Now after convicting the un regenerated man, he guides him into the

truth, he shows the un regenerated man what sin is, what righteousness is and what deliverance

is. (john 16:7-11) we can see in (1 corinthians 2:6-16) after a person have received the spirit, the

spirit begins to reveal the things of the spirit to him, helping in knowing the mind of God, and

walking in the light of the truth.

The holy spirit in the regenerated man.

clearly we know what the regenerated man is, the regenerated man is the opposite of the un

regenerated man. This is the man that have believed in Christ and have accepted him into his
life as his lord and personal savior. Although, Accepting and believing Christ is just the first

step to becoming a regenerated man. A person also have to be baptized by water and be filled

with the Holy Ghost. All this process can be called regeneration by spirit. A regenerated man

does not just receive the spirit at the moment but is also sealed with the spirit presence inside of

him. This divine seal now becomes a very powerful bond between God and man, as a

regenerated man, we are sealed with the spirit of God for eternity(john 14:16). The spirit in the

regenerated man begins to teach the regenerated man to walk in the light of the word of

God(john 14:26). The regenerated man now having the spirit of God living in him will begin to

have access to the gifts and the fruits of the spirit. His life has been bought and the devil no

longer have access to his life. he begings to hear from God, his life begings to show Christ, he

begings to live for Christ, and have passion for the things of Christ, the promises in the bible

begins to manifest in this life, he gains access to the wisdom and knowledge of God.
