1. Introduce yourself to the patient and clarify the patient’s identity. Explain the procedure to the
patient.
2. Ensure that you have all of your equipment ready as follows: alcohol gel, gloves, alcohol wipes,
tourniquet, IV cannula, plaster, syringe, saline, IV line and IV fluid, sharps bin
3. Wash hands or sanitize your hands using alcohol cleanser.
4. Position the arm so that it is comfortable for the patient and identify a vein.
5. Apply the tourniquet and re-check the vein.
6. Put on your gloves, clean the patient’s skin with the alcohol wipe and let it dry.
7. Remove the cannula from its packaging and remove the needle cover ensuring not to touch the
needle.
8. Stretch the skin distally and tell the patient to expect a sharp scratch.
9. Insert the needle, bevel upwards at about 30 degrees. Advance the needle until a flashback of
blood is seen in the hub at the back of the cannula.
10. Once this is seen, progress the entire cannula a further 2mm, then fix the needle, advancing
the rest of the cannula into the vein.
11. Release the tourniquet, apply pressure to the vein at the tip of the cannula and remove the
needle fully. Remove the cap from the needle and put this on the end of the cannula.
12. Carefully dispose of the needle into the sharps box.
13. Apply the dressing to the cannula to fix it in place.
14. Fill a syringe with saline and flush it through the cannula to check for patency. If there is any
resistance, if it causes any pain, or you notice any localised tissue swelling; immediately stop
flushing, remove the cannula and start again.
15. Dispose of your gloves and equipment in the clinical waste bin, ensure the patient is
comfortable and thank them. Note that as an extension to procedure, you may be asked to set up
an IV drip

1. Survey the scene.
2. Check responsiveness – hey hey are you ok?
3. Call for help! Activate EMS
4. (Quick pulse check within 10 secs, at the same time check for breathing), if no breathing no
pulse,
5. C – Chest compressions: 30 x; 100/min; 2 inches deep, push hard and fast. Count 1-2-3-4…..26-
27-28-29-and 1!
6. A – Airway: head tilt chin lift
7. B – Breathing: 2 breaths (1 second/breath)
8. Chest compressions 30 x
9. Continue cycles 30:2 compression-ventilation. Count 1-2-3-4…..26-27-28-29-and 5!
10. (Quick pulse check every 2 mins – approximately 5 cycles
11. If no breathing but with pulse, do artificial respiration; give 1 breath every 5 secs. Count 1-2-
3-1-blow. 1-2-3-2-blow…until 12 cycles
12. Recheck pulse and breathing every 2 mins.
