EARLY LIFE OF HERCULES

 Hercules was the son of Zeus, king of the gods,


and the mortal woman Alcmene
 He was brought up at the court of his
supposed-father Amphitryon, where he had the
best tutors in the land.
 He led a band of Theban warriors to defeat
the Minyans and restore order to Thebes.
 King Creon of Thebes gave Hercules his
daughter, Megara, in marriage as a sign of his
gratitude.
 Hercules was a young, successful hero,
married and, in time, with three strong sons.

for his completion.

 Hera stirred up trouble.

 Hercules defeated the tribe and killed Queen Hyppolita and


returned to Eurystheus with Hyppolita’s built
 Along his way, he killed many

 He reached the land at the end of
Miditerranean and built two great
rocks, called Pillars of Hercules
(Gibraltar and Ceuta)

 Bulls within the cattle got loose

 He took them to Eurystheus who sacrificed the herd of cattle to


Hera.
 Atlas is a marine creature who supported the pillars that
held the heaven and earth upon his shoulders, and was
the father of Hespiredes
 Hercules offered Atlas to take upon himself the burden
of the sky
 The clever Hercules asked him to take the sky back for
just a moment so Hercules could put a pad on his
shoulder to ease the pressure
 When Atlas carried it back, Hercules picked the
Golden Apples and went off
 Hercules traveled through a deep cave to
enter the underworld
 He freed Theseus from the Chair of
Forgetfulness
 Hercules reached Hades and asked to
take Cerberus to the surface

 Hades agreed, only, if he could beat


Cerberus without using any weapons

As punishment for his last murder,


Zeus sends Hercules to be a slave
to Queen Omphale of Lydia, who
forces him to dress and work as a
woman for a year (though some say
three years).
One time, however, Hercules refuses to see the error of his ways,
and this leads to his death. Angered that Zeus had punished him
for inadvertently killing King Eurytus’ son. Hercules killed Eurytus
and razes the city. One of his captives is a beautiful girl, Iole.
Deianira, Hercules’ wife, feels threatened, and recalls some magic
she earlier acquired, when Hercules shot a centaur named Nessus
who insulted Deianira.

He does not die and must end the agony by killing hiself, building
a giant funeral pyre where he burns himself to death
Ascending to Olympus, Hercules reconciles with Hera and
marries her daughter, Hebe.
