‘How are you feeling today?’ Martha
asked, when she came to visit.
Still too weak to raise her head from the
pillow, Emma smiled in her friend's direction.
‘I'm feeling a bit better,’ she said. ‘And I
think I'm going to live after all.’
‘Of course you're going to live,’ scolded
Martha.
Emma's face grew serious. ‘There's no of
course about it,’ she stated simply. ‘I know I
nearly died. And of this I'm sure, someone
who has come so close to death can't just pick
up the pieces and go on as they were going
before.’
Martha looked concerned. ‘Is she still a
little delirious?’ she wondered.

Ten Girls Who Made History
Kenneth had held missionary meetings the
previous year. As they sat on the slopes of
Beinn Ghuilean overlooking Campbeltown
Loch, they talked about their hopes and
plans for the future. They didn't know
where God would lead them, or exactly the
kind of work he wanted them to do, but they
felt it right to make an important decision
about their future. Within a few days of
being married, they committed themselves
to doing God's work without receiving any
payment... because they believed that God
would provide everything they needed. And
he did, as they discovered while they toured
the villages Bessie had grown to love. Their
home was another gypsy caravan, and their
equipment was a tent that could seat 150
people, and a big box of Christian books.
What they didn't know was that the books
held the key to an amazing future together.
