1. Name four different methods of turning on(triggering) a thyristor (4 marks)

2.Explain with sketch the operation of power MOSFET. (6 marks)
3. a) The diagram below shows a Triac.Describe its operation and construction (3 marks)

b) Draw and explain the V-I characteristics of TRIAC (5 marks)

4.Explain with circuit diagram and waveform the operation of single-phase center tapped full
wave controlled rectifier with R load. (4 marks)
5.A single-phase full wave-controlled rectifier is supplied with a voltage V = 230 sin 314t.if
firing angle ‘α’ is 300. Find:
a) Average dc output voltage (3 marks)
b) Load current for the load resistance of 100 Ω (2 marks)
c) Describe the operation of single-phase half wave-controlled rectifier with RL load and
draw the circuit diagram (5 marks)
6.Explain the operation of three phase semi converter (full wave half controlled with RLE load)
with circuit diagram and also sketch its input and output waveform (7 marks)
7.A controlled full-wave bridge rectifier has a source of 120Vrms at 60Hz,
R=10Ω, L=20mH, and α=60 Determine
(a) an expression for load current, (3 marks)
