DATE: 21/03/2023 MAX MARK: 50

II YEAR DURATION: 2 Hrs

PART – A (2x5=10)
1. What are the two types of synchronous generators? Where are they used?
2. Define pitch factor or coil span factor.
3. Write the causes of harmonics in the voltage and current waves of electrical machinery.
4. Define voltage regulation of alternator.
5. Define armature reaction in an alternator.

PART – B (2x8=16)
6. Derive the EMF equation of an alternator.
7. A 3 phase ,50 Hz,16 pole star connected alternator has a stator winding with 144 slots
with 10 conductors/slot. The magnetic flux/pole is 0.03 webers and is sinusoidally
distributed in space. The coil pitch of the winding is 8 slots. Estimate the e.m.f induced
between the lines of the alternator

PART – C (2x12=24)

8. Define armature reaction and explain the effect of armature reaction on different power
factor loads of synchronous generator.
9. A 3 phase, Y connected alternator has the following data: Voltage required to be
generated on O.C is 4000 V at 50 Hz, speed is 500 r.p.m, stator/pole/phase is 3,
conductors/slot is 12. Calculate the number of poles and useful flux/pole. Assume all the
conductors/phase to be connected in series and coil is full pitched
