What experts say about this book!

I would use this book as a source of practice material.

– Douglas K McLemore
Math, Science, and Pre-Health Tutoring, IcosaPrep

This will be an excellent resource for the kids.

– Vaibhav Sharma
Test Prep Expert

I think these test prep books seem very thorough. There seems to be a good variety
of topics and types of questions covered. I like there are test-taking tips and general
information at the beginning. I’m not sure teens will take the time to look through that
information, but it’s good to include it.

– Janine Sadler
Teen Services Librarian, Troy-Miami County Public Library

I believe Math Practice Test for the ACT and Practice Test for the SAT belong to our library
collection. We have patrons who seek materials to assist in college admission. I would
recommend either one of these titles - depending on the student’s needs. I personally
like the arrangement of test questions immediately followed by the section of answers.

– Linda Bryant
Alpine Public Library

I would definitely recommend these tests for practice.

– Kate Dalby
President, Inspiring Test Preparation, Inc.

Any book that can be used to prep students for the ACT is a necessary book for any
American high school library and classroom. Students need all the advice and practice
they can get, and this book makes a great addition to their prep resources.

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF THIS BOOK

480 math questions seem like a lot to practice, but it’s no secret that practice makes perfect. By practicing with
this book, you will be exposing yourself to the style, format, and types of math questions asked in the real ACT.
At the same time, you will be gaining enough practice with the core math content areas tested in the ACT. In this
way, you will be increasing your familiarity with the ACT test format, as well as solidifying your knowledge of math
concepts. With this book, you will be able to save time, cut down on confusion, and increase your chances of scoring
high on the real test day.

This book includes 8 full-length timed tests with a total of 480 math practice questions for thorough
practice. Each question comes with detailed answer explanations that will help you to understand the logic behind
a particular answer. This book also provides the difficulty level for all questions, which you can use to gauge your
preparation level and how ready you are to take the ACT.
Here are a few tips for getting the most out of your practice:

ACTIVATE WHAT YOU KNOW

The practice questions in this book have been constructed to be as similar to the real ACT in terms of difficulty
levels and content. Make use of the detailed answer guides given to understand the logic behind a particular answer,
even the answers that you get correct.

REVIEW AND REVISE

The math concepts tested on the ACT are ones you have encountered in high school. So all you need to do is
solidify the concepts you are already aware of. Don’t skip out on practicing concepts that you think are easy or that
you know; practice is the key.

TIME YOURSELF
Get the most out of your practice by timing yourself according to the test timings given before each test. For
optimum practice, take the tests in quiet, unfamiliar settings, simulating the conditions of the actual ACT.

MAKE EDUCATED GUESSES

Some questions are structured in a way that makes the answer obvious. Don’t hesitate to make educated
guesses for such questions instead of puzzling out the answer. However, do this only for questions you’re very sure
of.

SET A TARGET SCORE

Once you’ve taken the first few tests, you will be able to obtain an idea of your average score and how much
it deviates from the score you need to obtain. Set a target score over and above the actual target score you want to
receive and work towards attaining that.
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE
The best way to score high on the ACT is to practice as much as possible. Review your answers after every test
and keep a chart of your progress. Make note of the questions you’ve not answered correctly and set aside additional
time for reviewing those concepts.

USE THE ONLINE RESOURCES

This book comes with Online Resources that can be used to supplement your practice. You can use the
printable answer sheets provided for extra practice once you’ve used the ones in the book. Additionally, you can
use the ACT formula sheet to brush up on the formulas you’ll need for the ACT.

You will find the online resources on www.vibrantpublishers.com. Simply go to the website, find the product
page for Math Practice Tests for the ACT, and click the ‘online resources’ button.
Happy learning!

HOW CAN OUR PRACTICE BOOK HELP YOU BEYOND THE ACT?
The aim of standardized tests like the ACT is to test your readiness for college-level math programs and
graduate math courses. Thus, you should aim to master these math concepts not just for the ACT, but also from the
point of view of college math courses, math degrees, and mathematics programs that you may eventually pursue in
the future. If you prepare well for the ACT, you will essentially be familiarizing yourself with all the fundamental
concepts taught in these courses.

Get ready to ace the ACT today!

About the
ACT Math

INTRODUCTION
The Math section of the ACT is an assessment of the mathematical skills students have acquired from a
high school level up to the grade 11. The content covered in the ACT focuses on areas required for successful
performance in entry-level college programs in mathematics. In this section, your knowledge of fundamental
mathematical concepts will be tested through your ability to apply the concepts and formulas you’ve learned
and choose the right answer. You will need to know basic formulas in order to be able to solve the problems, but
recalling complex formulas and conducting extensive computation is not necessary.

The Math section of the ACT tests your ability to use mathematical tools, basic geometry, algebra, statistics,
and basic trigonometry. It is an assessment of your ability to understand quantitative information and analyze
and interpret it. You should be able to utilize data-interpretation skills to evaluate real-life information, analyze
problems, and arrive at a logically sound and appropriate solution.

You can use a calculator for the Math section. For more information on the types and models of calculators
allowed, check the official ACT website, act.org

WHAT YOU REQUIRE

• Knowledge of basic formulas
• Knowledge of fundamental math concepts
• Computational skills
FORMAT OF THE MATH SECTION
The test takes 60 minutes to complete and consists of 60 questions. The questions are multiple-choice
questions that have five options. They are either stand-alone questions or part of a set, for example, questions
related to a graph or pie chart.
CONCEPTS COVERED
Number & Quantity
Real and complex number systems, numerical quantities, integers and rational exponents, and vectors and
matrices.
Algebra
Equations, linear, polynomial, radical, and exponential relationships, solving, graphing, and modeling
multiple types of expressions.
Functions
Linear, radical, piecewise, polynomial, and logarithmic functions.
Geometry
Congruence, similarity relationships, surface area and volume measurements, composition of objects,
trigonometric ratios and equations of conic sections, finding missing values in triangles, circles, and other
figures.
Statistics & Probability
Center and spread of distributions, data collection methods, model relationships in bivariate data, calculation
of probabilities.
Integrating Essential Skills
Rates and percentages, proportional relationships, area, surface area and volume, average and median,
expressing numbers in different ways.
Modeling
Producing, interpreting, understanding, evaluating, and improving models.

SCORING SCALE
Nine scores are reported for the mathematics section: a score for the section overall and eight reporting
category scores based on specific mathematical knowledge and skills. The overall scores range from 1 (low) to 36
(high), which is obtained from the raw scores you receive out of a total of 60. This is the score which is considered
by colleges, along with the overall ACT composite score.

The approximate weightage assigned to each type of question is given below:

Higher Math (overall) 57-60%

Number & Quantity 7–10%
Algebra 12–15%
Functions 12–15%
Geometry 12–15%
Statistics & Probability 8–12%
Integrating Essential Skills 40–43%
Modeling Each question is counted in the appropriate categories above.
Math Practice Tests for the ACT 2
TEST TIPS
• Read each question carefully to be sure of what is being asked.
• Choose your answer carefully and make sure you are selecting the right answer.
• Do not waste time on questions you are not sure of. Save them for the last and focus on completing the ones
you know first.
• Check the rules for calculators in advance so that you know what types are allowed and what types are
prohibited.
