SSC-R Seminar 1

I have decided to take up Legal Studies because it is an ambition of mine and my late grandfather’s that I
become the first lawyer of our clan. Corresspondingly, it has been a life-long frustration of him that our
family should finally have someone of the Legal Profession, mainly because my Aunt wasn’t able to fulfill
such desire of my Grandfather to her. On the other hand, significant land properties were left by my
grandfather after he died, and many of our relatives have taken interest. As the eldest of the third generation
of our clan, I feel that I somehow have the duties and responsibilities to protect the remaining of what he
left, to pass it down to further descendants of our direct bloodline. Thus, pursuing the Legal Profession
seems to be the most appropriate for me to do in order to fulfill such duties.

The Lawyer I admire the most would definitely be the Retired Associate Justice of the Supreme Court and
former Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales. For me, she had become an exemplar of what a true lawyer
should be. Someone who is well-versed of the law, fearless and stubborn, impervious to influence, and with
unquestionable integrity. Notably, during her time as the ombudsman, she undoubtedly gave her best efforts
to uphold the law in its maximum capacity, ousting those who disobeys and offends the law without an
ounce of remorse. Furthermore, regardless of their status, the former Ombudsman showed no fear.

Perhaps the best description I can give to myself as a successful lawyer is when I am recognized as the
lawyer who can never be subjected to evil influences. Someone who helped those in dire need without
seeking for big return from them. Someone with a reputation of fearing God with all his heart and upholds
the law even if it’s painful to their conscience. And finally, the lawyer who was able to protect his family
and spoiled them with joy by having the financial freedom to do so.
