Max Bill
1908–1994
Max Bill was a swiss painter,
sculptor, graphic artist,
and Industrial designer.
He studied architecture,
metalwork, stage design,
and painting at the Bauhaus.
In 1930 he opened his
own design studio in Zurich
and practiced as a graphic
designer.
In 1953 he, Inge Aicher-
Scholl and Otl Aicher
co-founded the HfG Ulm. He
also designed its buildings.
Herbert Ohl
1926
Trained as a painter and
architect, Ohl contributed
to developing Industrialized
Building at HfG Ulm which
included pre-fabricated
building components and
modular designs.
He also worked on
automobile and furniture
design.
Otl Aicher
1922–1991
A German graphic designer
and educator who co-
founded the HfG Ulm
where he taught visual
communication. Whilst at
Ulm he collaborated on
the design and display of
Braun products with Hans
Gugelot, though he is best
known for his graphic design
programme for the 1972
Munich Olympics, which
embraced all the visual
dimensions of the event,
ranging from uniforms and
interiors, to maps, street
signs, and pictograms
denoting individual sporting
activities.
He also worked on corporate
identity graphics for clients
including Lufthansa,
Frankfurt Airport, Koenig
Pilsner, and Erco.
Gui Bonsiepe
1934
Studied information design
at the HfG Ulm and worked
as product designer and is a
leading design theorist and
educator.
He practices as a designer
and consultant for
industrialization policy
in Latin America (Chile,
Argentina, Brazil). He lives
and works in Brazil and
Argentina.
Inge Aicher-Scholl
1917–1998
Writer and educationist, she
was one of the co-founders
of the HfG Ulm along with Otl
Aicher and Max Bill.
She remained active in
Germany’s peace movement
throughout her life.
Herbert Lindinger
1933
Lindinger is a German
industrial designer, who
designed office products,
electrical products, buses,
trains and trams, such as TW
6000 in Germany.
Lindinger also developed
corporate logos and many
of his designs continue
unchanged till today such as
the Mont Blanc symbol.
Tomas Maldonado
1922
Argentinian-born Maldonado,
painter, industrial designer,
and design theorist, is known
for his considerable influence
on design thinking and
practice in the second half of
the 20th century.
His reputation was
established during his years
at the HfG Ulm where he
laid the theoretical and
methodological foundations
of design. Maldonado
believed in a systematic,
scientific, and theoretical
underpinning of the design
process and played a key
role in moving the curriculum
away from its Bauhaus-
inspired beginnings towards
an approach that was felt to
be more appropriate to deal
with the complexities of post-
Second World War living.
Horst Rittel
1930 - 1990
Rittel was a mathematician
and theoretical physicist
and taught methodology,
communication theory,
theory of science,
epistemology and operations
research at HfG Ulm.
He is best-known (along
with M. Webber) for coining
the term wicked problem
and contributed greatly to
developing Design Theories
and Methods (DTM).
Hans Gugelot
1920–1965
An influential product
designer closely identified
with the clean, systematic,
and functional styling of
HfG Ulm exemplified by his
design of Braun products.
Gugelot initially trained in
engineering and architecture
in Switzerland.
He subscribed to the Ulm
philosophy of design that
rejected traditional notions
of the intuitive, creative
individual designer in
favour of a collaborative
multidisciplinary and
scientific approach to design.
He designed modular office
systems and is remembered
for the Kodak Carousel slide
projector.
William S. Huff
1927
An American architect who
worked with Louis Kahn, Huff
came as a Fulbright student
to HfG Ulm and was later
guest teacher there.
Walter Zeischegg
1917–1983
Zeischegg studied sculpture
in Vienna and later worked
at the Institute of Product
Research and Development
at HfG Ulm.
Zeischegg did extensive work
in morphology and devoted
his attention to geometric
form of studies, from which
several products were
created.
Konrad Wachsmann
1901 - 1980
Wachsmann was an
architect and was noted
for his contribution to the
mass production of building
components.
In 1941 he moved to
the United States, where
he began collaboration
with Walter Gropius and
developed the “Packaged
House System”, a design
for a house which could be
constructed in less than nine
hours.
