 MODULE 1 LESSON 1: UNDERSTANDING
CULTURE, SOCIETY, AND POLITICS: SOME KEY
OBSERVATIONS

Society in its broader sense involves social (i.e., actions and

interactions), cultural (i.e., practices and traditions) and political (i.e., power
relations) realities. As formal and systematic studies of society, these three
facets are referred to as the “social sciences,” also known in academia as
“disciplines.” These disciplines may be likened to a lens, which changes the
way the wearer sees things in terms of color, focus, and details. In other
words, they change a person’s perspective.

OBJECTIVE/S:
At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
1. Articulate observations on human cultural variations, social differences,
social change, and political identities
2. Trace the link between behavior and culture through observation and
analysis.

Site the similarities and differences of the cultures observed between the
OLD TIMES AND PRESENT TIMES.

This lesson explores the dynamics of social, political and

cultural behavior and phenomena in relation to the normalizing effects of
cultural structures, practices, and rituals as overarching frames. It also
focuses on the social and cultural backgrounds of students as acting subjects
or social actors, agents, and persons and the power of social forces to shape
human actions and interactions.

OBJECTIVE/S:
At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
1. Articulate how sociology, anthropology and political science explain the
notions of the social within their respective disciplinal domains.
2. Understand the shared concerns of sociology, anthropology and political
science with respect to the nature of social change.
3. Appreciate the role of social diversity in promoting social understanding and
cultural tolerance
