Data

- A set of characters that is gathered and translated for some purpose

Information

- Is the data that was processed so a human can read, understand and use it
- classified or organized data that has some meaningful value for the user
o Data must meet the criteria of Accuracy, Completeness, and Timeliness for it to be
consumed for decision-making

Dataset- A data set is an organized collection of data

Data Analytics and Data Science

- The science of analyzing raw data to make conclusions about an information using algorithm
and machine learning
- It is a broad area that encompasses many different different types of data analysis

Data Analysis Steps

1. The first step is to determine the data requirements or how the data is grouped. Data may be
separated by age, demographic, income, or gender. Data values may be numerical or be divided
by category.
2. The second step is the process of collecting it. This can be done through a variety of sources
such as computers, online sources, cameras, environmental sources, or through personnel.
3. Once the data is collected, it must be organized so it can be analyzed. This may take place on a
spreadsheet or other form of software that can take statistical data.
4. The data is then cleaned up before analysis. This means it is scrubbed and checked to ensure
there is no duplication or error, and that it is not incomplete. This step helps correct any errors
before it goes on to a data analyst to be analyzed.

The Use of Data in Politics

1. Public Information
Citizens of a given state need to know and understand how the gov’t work
2. Election Forecast
Media channels clamor for the most updated and accurate forecast
They use models developed by statisticians- to predict results
3. Political Campaign Strategies
Large amount of campaign funds goes on tarpaulins, radio and television campaigns materials,
but significant amount of money also goes into statistical researches on public opinion of a
candidate’s position on issues, voters’ attitudes, demographics, etc.
4. Public Policy and Economic Regulations, and Legislation
Data drives planning and decision-making
5. Diplomacy and International Initiatives
6. STUDIES
DATA is a CORE resource for social studies; key to interpreting patterns that may lead to better
understanding the events happening in the society and the world
Regional Initiatives for Data Polices

1. ASEAN Digital Masterplan 2025- which will see the formation of an ASEAN open data network
and digital data governance framework.
2. Digital ASEAN Initiative – one of its focus areas is the Pan-ASEAN Data Policy to shape a
common regional data policy

Open Data Repositories:

Open data is data that can be freely used, re-used and redistributed by anyone - subject only, at most, to
the requirement to attribute and share alike

Open Data Philippines –

- The Open Data Philippines (ODPH) Portal is an online repository of open data from different
government agencies. ODPH addresses the constitutional right of Filipinos to information and
data. This is an initiative promoting transparent, participatory, inclusive, and accountable
governance.

OpenStat DATABASE –

- statistics generated and compiled by the PSA at the national and sub-national levels. These are
limited to summarized and/or aggregated data which are organized into three (3) major
domains, namely, (1) Demographic and Social Statistics, (2) Economic Statistics, and (3)
Environment and Multi-domain Statistics.
