Assignment Instructions

A. Website Critique Assignment

There are a variety of information systems that are being used in health care, particularly in
nursing. Do a search in the world wide web and look for different kinds of health care systems
or information systems. Choose one and review the site using the guidelines found below for
evaluating websites.

The link below is a good resource on how to evaluate websites:

http://lrs.ed.uiuc.edu/students/tbarcalow/490net/evaluation.htm

Include the following information when you make your website critique:
1. Provide the universal resource locator (URL) of the site, a short overview of the sites
content and the date of the website review.
2. What are the major categories of information covered on the site?
3. Who is/are the audience for the site? What clues define the audience? Provide evidence
such as tone, voice, language and assumed knowledge.
4. Provide the hypertext links on the website page? Describe how the various links relate
to the main theme? Are the links consistent with the main theme? Or does the site have
personal links? Is it a mix of various personal interest of an individual?
5. What kinds of graphics that are found on the site? Include a detailed description. How
do they make the site easier to use or help explain concepts? Do the images support
text information or do they stand alone? Do they overuse graphics to the point of
distraction? Who are the various audiences for these images? What are your clues?
6. What cues or evidences do you have about the credibility of the site and the
information? From what organizations or institutions does the site originate? Some
websites or apps can create a legit sounding name or logo, what beyond the surface
credibility gives you clues about the reliability of the site and its information? If the site
is sponsored, are they involved in the research? Give evidence. Does the site have built
in bias? For example, is the website and advertisement for a service or a product? Does
the site have a specific social or political agenda? Having sponsors whether private or
government is not bad but is the sponsor “tricky” about its alliances?
7. Create broad observations about what you learned about the topic you choose to
investigate by exploring the site. What did you learn about exploring internet resources?
What reflection you can give about the usefulness and value of the information you
found on the internet while being aware that you have only looked at one site related to

Course Name: Nursing Informatics 12

Course Code: NCM 110
the content of this week’s lesson? What did you learn about the importance of
critiquing sources on the web and non-web based with a critical eye?
8. Which type of website does the information appear? Is it educational (.edu),
government (.gov), or organization (.org) or commercial (.com) or network
infrastructure (.net) website? Is it a personal homepage, a special interest site, an
information site, a news / journalistic site, or a commercial site?
9. Describe how the information on this site enhance your practice?
These points are given to help you analyze a particular website that you choose and form
opinion and backing it up with evidence that support your point of view. Your website critique
should be narrative in format, that follows a pattern (Introduction, Body and Conclusion).
Design your work that is fun to read and interesting.

Length of paper: Maximum of 5 pages not including the title page and reference page, double
spaced, Calibri, 12-point font, APA 7.

B. Self-Reflection Discussion Assignment

This is a 2-part activity. Part 1, the learner will participate in a virtual gaming simulation (VGS)
created Ryerson University. The learner will perform and finish successfully in the TeamWorks
simulation (link is provided below). The learner can perform multiple times or may explore the
simulation before downloading and submitting the summary report.

https://de.ryerson.ca/games/nursing/hospital/index.html

Part 2 of this assignment is to write a self-reflection discussion. The learner is expected to write
about the usefulness, impact, and the future of the use of technology in nursing based on the
TeamWorks simulation. The learner is expected to write the emotions, thoughts, and
reflections as a result of playing the virtual gaming simulation. In writing self-reflection, you are
not expected to include a review of literature nor defining terms is not an expectation of self-
reflective discussions. Please feel free to write about your experience with the TeamWorks

simulation. Your experience should be related to the use of technology and its future in nursing.
To help you start writing your self-reflection check the notes below.
