ATTEMPT TO FILM

Last week, you have learned about the

elements of film. Films appeal to children as well as
adults. Further, they also appeal across lines of social
stratification, across differences of gender, and
across differences of race. But how do they do that?
What are secrets and keys to producing these films
that the general mass consume?

Pre-test GUESS THE FILM

Whenever we were asked what the BEST movie is, we can’t seem to name one
because we have a long list of what we consider as best movie. So here, IMDb helped
us name some of what can be consider as the greatest film of the 21st century. Let us see
if you have watched some of them already. Try to guess the title of the film using the given
clues.

Content and Discussion

We all agree films offer us a different way

to escape – but it is more than simple
escapism. They take us to places and
worlds we have never been and inside
the skin of people quite different from
ourselves. They offer us a window onto
the wider world, broadening our
perspective and opening our eyes to new
wonders. It is more than just a story – but they make us feel and think at the same time.
After learning what film is, let us dig deeper unto the various genres that it presents to
us…
MAIN FILM GENRES

 usually include high energy, big-budget physical stunts and chases, possibly with
rescues, battles, fights, escapes, destructive crises

ACTION

 usually exciting stories, with new experiences or exotic locales; they can include
traditional swashbucklers or pirate films, and historical spectacles

ADVENTURE

 they have light-hearted plots consistently and deliberately designed to amuse and
provoke laughter (with one-liners, jokes, etc.) by exaggerating the situation, the
language, action, relationships and characters

COMEDY

 they are developed around the sinister actions of criminals or mobsters, particularly
bankrobbers, underworld figures, or ruthless hoodlums who operate outside the law,
stealing and murdering their way through life

CRIME
Course Material: Art Appreciation 7

 they are serious, plot-driven presentations, portraying realistic characters, settings,

life situations, and stories involving intense character development and interaction

DRAMA

 they are costume dramas, historical dramas, war films, medieval romps, or 'period
pictures' that often cover a large expanse of time set against a vast, panoramic
backdrop

EPICS

 they are designed to frighten and to invoke our hidden worst fears, often in a
terrifying, shocking finale, while captivating and entertaining us at the same time in
a cathartic experience

HORROR

 they are cinematic forms that emphasize full-scale scores or song and dance
routines in a significant way, or they are films that are centered on combinations of
music, dance, song or choreography

MUSICAL/DANCE
 they are often quasi-scientific, visionary and imaginative - complete with heroes,
aliens, distant planets, impossible quests, improbable settings, fantastic places,
great dark and shadowy villains, futuristic technology, unknown and unknowable
forces, and extraordinary monsters, either created by mad scientists or by nuclear
havoc
SCIENCE FICTION

 they are films that acknowledge the horror and heartbreak of war, letting the actual
combat fighting (against nations or humankind) on land, sea, or in the air provide
the primary plot or background for the action of the film

WAR

 they are the major defining genre of the American film industry - a eulogy to the
early days of the expansive American frontier

WESTERN
Course Material: Art Appreciation 8

Since we know the different genres of film, it is

now time to take a more detailed look at the
stages a film goes through. Below are the seven
key stages in getting a film from an initial idea
through to watching it on the big screen.

THE SEVEN STAGES OF FILM PRODUCTION

(According to Guild of Great Britain)

1. Development
The start of a project varies, but generally
will begin with development of a script, be
that an existing script, a book, a brief story
outline. Development may also start with
a Director and/or Writer pitching an idea
to a Producer.

2. Pre-Production
This is the phase where you would narrow
down the options of the production. It is
where all the planning takes place before
the camera rolls and sets the overall vision of the project. Pre-production also includes
working out the shoot location and casting. The Producer will now hire a Line Manager or
Production Manager to create the schedule and budget for the film.

3. Production
During this phase it is key to keep planning ahead of the daily shoot. The primary aim is
to stick to the budget and schedule, this requires constant vigilance. Communication is
key between locations, set, office, Production Company, distributors - in short, all parties
involved.

4. Principal Photography
This is when the camera rolls. It is nearly always
the most expensive phase of film production, due
to actor, director, and set crew salaries, as well as
the costs of certain shots, props, and on-set
special effects. Everything that has happened up
to this point is to make principal photography go
as smoothly and efficiently as possible.
Communication between all parties is crucial
during the shoot and the production must maintain
a full set of records and strive to remain on time
and on budget.

5. Wrap
The period immediately after
shooting ends. It is when we strike
(dismantle) the set and clear the
location. Everything must be
returned in good order to suppliers
and there must be a full set of
records of the shoot.

6. Post-Production
This stage starts when principal
photography ends, but they may
overlap. The bulk of post-
production consists of reviewing
the footage and assembling the
movie - editing. There will be
contributions as required from
Visual Effects (VFX), Music and Sound Design. The picture will now be locked and
delivery elements will be created. Further information on Post Production can be found
later on in Week 1 of the course.

7. Distribution
Once the film is completed, it must be distributed. This is how producers make their
money back and a considerable amount of time and energy will be invested to secure the
right distribution deals for their projects. The film will go into the cinema and/or be
distributed via various platforms such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, and HBO etc.

Assessment Activities WELCOME TO MY VLOG!

With the birth of technology, people, especially teenagers were able to find ways
on how to maximize it. And video blogs (vlogs), either watching or creating one, have
become part of their daily lives. Now, let us try this trend and let us come up with our own
vlog. Choose any topic that you want – it could be informative, entertaining, or even
motivational – then use this guideline in vlogging to produce your own vlog. Click here.
Then upload it according to your professor’s instructions.
