Explain different policies implemented by Indian government in the field of education.

India has a rich tradition of imparting Education. Infact ,India has been one of the greatest centers of
education since the ancient time and the ancient teachers were men of great virtues. The traditional
rules of gurus,seers,ustaads have Undergone great transformation with the advent of British rule and
education.
Post independence the greatest development and revival took place in the field of education.
Emphasis was given on improving the standard, system of education in India by applying nehruian
approach by introducing various education policies and programmes under the Nehru government
(kothari commission)
Time And again efforts have been taken by various governments in India to develop the education
system like the introduction of NEP during Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure. Various steps were undertaken by the
government to improve the same.
(1)Primary Education or elementary education:
It was given more emphasis.
The aim behind the universalization of elementary education was to make education accessible to all
irrespective of state and region. In order to achieve the goal, the district primary education programme
was implemented in seven states of India namely Tamil Nadu,Kerala, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh,
Haryana ,Assam and Karnataka. The main aim was to bring down the dropouts and make education
reachable to children below 14.
(2)sarva shiksha abhiyan:
This was the corner stone Of the educational policy of the indian government.It
stressed on education for all. “Let’s all learn,let’s all progress” What’s the motto of this programme. With
this motto, the programme was launched in 2001. The right of free education was granted to children in
the age group of 6 to 14 vide the‘86th amendment to the constitution of India’. The main objective of
‘sarva shiksha abhiyan’ Was to eliminate the disproportion in the access to primary education.Earlier
programmes like ‘khadu-phala yojana’, ‘mid day meal’ were combined with this programme to make it
successful.This programme gave special attention to the education of girls and children with special
needs (divyang).
