Assessing the Accessibility of Healthcare Services in Barangay San Jose, San

Luis, Pampanga

Introduction

Access to healthcare is the access of all the resident or in a community service ,provider or
institution appropriate to the proportion of their needs. It is a critical achieving and hard to catch
any specific group of community especially because this place is not immediately or sometimes
not reachable by the official people in a city. In addition, finding areas with limited spatial
accessibility allows planners to see the effect of opening, relocating, closing, or modifying the
services of existing facilities. The degree of accessibility of health care institutions is one of the
most significant indicators for measuring the efficiency of the health care system (Gatrell and
Elliott 2009).

The access of public to health care institution as could be seriously restricted by distance
(Black and al 2004). In general, longer the distance to health care facilities higher the risk of
fatalities (Jones et al 1998; Hare and Barcus 2007)The study of accessibility to health care has
long been of interest to medical geographers and other social scientists (Quah 1977; Joseph
and Phillips 1984). Public provision of health care services is among the biggest problems in
developing countries and the accessibility of health care institutions is one of the most important
factors in constituting healthy communities. Potential access is considered to be a function of
the geographic distribution and supply of healthcare services, while realized access refers to
actual utilization rates (Joseph & Phillips, 1984).

Health researchers often opt for simpler metrics of accessibility such as the distance to the
nearest service, service-to-population ratios, or service areas (Apparicio, Abdelmajid, Riva, &
Shearmur, 2008).Accessibility metrics have often been employed to measure the equity of the
spatial distribution of opportunities (Golub & Martens, 2014; Grengs, 2015; Guzman, Oviedo, &
Rivera, 2017). However, most health studies measuring access to healthcare facilities have paid
little attention to how both spatial and non-spatial characteristics, such as socio-economic
status, relate to access levels (Bissonnette, Wilson, Bell, & Shah, 2012). The service-to-
population ratio, on the other hand, does consider demand, but gives no indication as to how far
individuals would need to travel to reach a service and is often calculated via aggregated areal
units that are too large to conclude meaningful results (Guagliardo, 2004; Love & Lindquist,
1995).
