TASK G
In this section we’ll work with different problems associated to the wrong use of the internet
1. Your Information Technology (IT) teacher asked you to work on a project on CYBERBULLYING.
b. Then, you searched the web for information about it and you found this article.
15
The research showed that 7 in 10 young people were victims
of cyberbullying and 37% of those experienced cyberbullying
frequently.
Mr Hackett said that 20% of young people reported extreme cyberbullying daily and that cyberbullies use
Facebook more than any other social network to harass their victims. According to the report Facebook, Ask.fm
and Twitter were the most common sources of cyberbullying. The research also suggested that young men and
women are equally at risk of cyberbullying. Studies showed that this phenomenon can have catastrophic effects
on self-esteem and social life. “The content becomes viral very quickly and when comments are put out on a
public platform it can be more distressing for the victim because a lot of people are exposed to this content, so
it's incredibly harmful."
Mr Hackett said the idea of the report was to educate young people, parents, schools and the Government about
cyberbullying and how to report it. “We believe social networks should measure cyberbullying activity on a
network, how many people are reporting cyberbullying and what happened as a result, and we believe that those
reports should be made public."
A Facebook spokesman said: "We don't tolerate bullying on Facebook and that's why we provide the best tools
and support in the industry for people to report bullying to us or to someone else who can help them."

young people in the long term. Watch the video again and complete the notes. Do you agree or
disagree with their ideas?
Task H.
Final task. We’ve been talking about social media, cyberbullying and sexting. Now it’s your turn to
produce content to raise awareness about the dangers of social media and how to keep safe.
Follow the steps below:
18
EXTRA PRACTICE
We have been working with topics connected to our everyday life such as cyberbullying, cyber
safety and sexting. But...how much do you know about the history of the internet? How much can
you guess about its future? we’ll learn about how it all started and where it is going …
Task 1. Nowadays, it might seem impossible to imagine a world where the internet isn’t relevant. However,
if you think about it this technological marvel is still a pretty recent invention.
INTRODUCTION
The Internet is a network, or system, that connects millions of computers worldwide. It was one of the greatest
inventions of the 1900s.
Since its beginning, the Internet has changed a great deal. Today, thanks to advances in technology, using the
internet is quicker and easier.
In the 1960s the U.S. government, businesses, and colleges worked together to make a system that would let
computers across the United States share information. They created an early form of the Internet called
ARPANET in 1969. In 1971 electronic mail, or e-mail, appeared.
By the mid-1970s they started using routers to connect many groups of computers in networks. This is how the
original ARPANET eventually grew into the Internet.
In 1989 hypertext was invented. Hypertext is a link between different parts of an electronic document or
between different documents. Hypertext became the basis of the World Wide Web, or “the Web,” which was
created in the early 1990s.
Internet use has grown and grown non-stop. The number of websites is endless, but there are 3 that are
representative of their times.
The 90s were dominated by AOL (America onLine). The company offered dialup connections to users. They
also provided email and instant messaging services. They were extremely popular, receiving up to 400 million
monthly visits during its peak.
The turn of the century brought about a change, though. The internet had become bigger and required a little
more organizing, and search engines started to become essential to the internet experience. For the first six
years of the 21st Century, Yahoo was the dominant search engine and therefore the most popular website.
The next four years saw both Yahoo and Google fighting for the top spot before Google cemented its
popularity in 2010 and Yahoo fell from grace for good.
Google’s highest monthly number of visits is 81 billion, a lot higher than what AOL had ever gotten. Social
19
media sites are also becoming quite important now, and they might prove to be a threat to Google’s
dominance.
b. So as to organise the information you decide to draw a timeline. Work in pairs and write
down the dates and most relevant events.
c. Some expressions call your attention. You’re not sure about their meaning so you ask a
classmate to help you decide:
Yahoo fell from grace for good “fell from grace” means …
a. people start liking you
b. people stop liking you
“for good” means
a. always/forever
b. never
d. Now that you have organised the events chronologically and checked your vocabulary
doubts, you decide to read the text more deeply. You jot down some ideas but you’re not
so sure. You ask a classmate to help you check them. Were all your ideas correct? Can you
correct those which are not?
1. Routers and hypertext were very important for the birth of the internet.
2. AOL invented e-mails in the 1990s.
3. Google was more popular than Yahoo in the early XXIst century.
4. Yahoo and Google fought for more than a decade to be at the top.
Task 2.
20
You keep searching information and find some interesting information at:
https://datareportal.com/global-digital-overview
a. You´re amazed at so many numbers. Are these numbers describing the situation in the
present? in the past? in the future? Go over the text and complete
b. Now, you want to reorganise the information in a chart. Read the information below and
complete the gaps.
In the last year Every day, an average person In December this year internet

TASK 3
The future of internet communication. Complete the following predictions with will/won´t using
the verbs in the box.
22
Task 4
a. You find more interesting info. Some verbs are missing. Can you complete them?
Pay attention to time references. For example “in 1973” refers to a completed action in the past
so you need to use “simple past”
“now” refers to the present, so … what tense will you use?
You can highlight time expressions before you complete the gaps.
It’s impossible to discuss the history of mobile apps without first looking at the mobile phone. The

development ___________ (help) in translation for conversations in real-time. The AI in mobile
applications _____________ (change) the face of technology and __________ (take) mobile app
development to a whole new level.
b) At home, you share your readings with your family. You start thinking about what apps will do
in the future. Write down some predictions. Use will + verb in the infinitive. Here are some
illustrations to help you:
23
Examples: I predict that in the future, all apps will be free.I predict that in the future, there will be
an app that will track your feelings.
TASK 5
a. Do you remember how comparatives and superlatives are used? Which words can
become comparatives and superlatives? Let’s revise this a little bit before doing the
following activity!
24
For short adjectives, we follow these rules:
