The article written by Donald Klingborg, Dale Moore, and Sonya Varea-Hammond
entitled ‘What is leadership?’ discusses some of the history of leadership, current
thoughts on attributes of effective leaders, and the differences and similarities between leaders and managers; identifies selected teachable leadership tools; and describes various styles and purposes of existing leadership programs. They provided a lot of new information with regard to leadership in comparison to modern leadership to traditional one. They mentioned in the article that leadership is like love, where it is universally desired yet difficult to define in a clear and detailed manner. The word ‘leadership’ is often confused and integrated with management. But all throughout the article, it was presented the detailed differences between the two words and the connection underlying the terms. Men are leaders that we foresee to lead a group of people, organizations, businesses, and even a state and nation way back before that became tradition unto our belief systems and one of the norms in society. It was also mentioned in the article that there is a major gender bias even in leadership in the health sciences; men have a higher probability of attaining leadership than those women even when they are more capable. Leaders indeed have a great responsibility to maintain and to achieve clear visions of what he/she dreams in partnership with a great capacity to overcome and tangled with different levels of circumstances along the way and need to have acquired great leadership skills. Some people are luckily born with such traits, and some were not lucky to have one but have the spirit to lead and are eager and willing to develop such skills. With that, different teachable leadership tools and programs were presented and discussed in the said article that help such persons to develop such leadership skills. One such program is buying into an organization or recruiting an audience who are interested in leadership education and presenting information that is designed to create support for the policies, decisions, goals, and visions of an organization. Another program presented in the article in relation to the program is individual growth which focused on the growth of an individual and may include broad or narrow exposures designed to push and pull the audience to see the issue and problems in a broader and larger context. The third program which bears relevance and importance in the topic is the leadership toolbox which delivers different leadership tools which include the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to deal with creative problem-solving and formulating strategic planning. This program is very suitable to teach leaders of the future in a manner consistent with the goals of professional school. In conclusion, leadership and being a leader is not just a simple task and just picking whomever we want just to fill in such a great position, but it requires much more time and knowledge as well as enough skills to be qualified. Leadership influences people nothing more, nothing less, which means everyone has some level of influence, so, everyone is a leader, but it doesn’t mean that everyone is a good leader. Leadership needs to have programs that could help mold and develop leaders in society. The world is drastically changing and there are a lot of factors that could affect the decision of choosing a great leader but having such improved and well-developed programs and leadership tools could be a relief. And good leadership must be partnered with great management.
