Answer 3: Magnetic compass.

Answer 4: A magnet loses its magnetism if it is hammered, heated or dropped from a height.

Answer 5: Iron and nickel can be attracted by a magnet.

Answer 6: A natural magnet naturally occurs in nature. Lodestone is an example of a natural magnet.

Answer 7: The magnets repel each other. As the same poles repel each other.

Answer 8: To magnetise an iron bar, one of the poles of the bar magnet is placed near the edge of
the iron bar. The bar magnet is then moved along the length of the iron bar without lifting till it
reaches the end. Then the magnet is lifted and brought to its initial position. The pole and the
direction of movements of the bar magnet should remain same in this process. This process is
repeated several times and ultimately the iron gains magnetic properties.

Answer 9: The properties of the magnet are as follows:

i. A bar magnet attracts magnetic materials, such as iron, nickel, and cobalt, towards itself.

ii. A freely suspended bar magnet always aligns along the North−South direction.

Answer 10: Natural magnets are the magnets that are found in nature. One example of natural
magnet is magnetite. The magnets that are made of pieces of iron artificially are called artificial
magnets. Horse-shoe magnet is an example of an artificial magnet.
