Unit 4
I grew up with the cubs, though they of course were grown wolves almost before
I was a child, and Father Wolf taught me his business, and the meaning of things in
the jungle, till every rustle in the grass, every breath of the warm night air, every
note of the owls above my head, every scratch of a bat’s claws as it roosted for a
while in a tree, and every splash of every little fish jumping in a pool, meant just as
much to me as the work of his office means to a business man. When I was not
learning I sat out in the sun and slept, and ate, and went to sleep again; when I felt
dirty or hot I swam in the forest pools; and when I wanted honey (Baloo told me
that honey and nuts were just as pleasant to eat as raw meat) I climbed up for it,
as Bagheera showed me how to do.

Unit 5
Possible answers:

1 Although there are modern ways to mine salt, some ancient methods
are still used today.
2 In order to dissolve the salt, water is poured into large holes in the soil.
3 A thin crust of salt crystals forms as the water evaporates.
4 More water evaporates when the crust is broken.
5 Once the remaining salt water thickens, the salty brine is packed into palm-trunk
moulds or pressed into flat cakes.
6 When the salt cakes are dry, they are wrapped in palm-fibre mats.
7 The salt cakes are loaded onto camels so that they can be sent to other areas.
8 Poor-quality salt is fed to animals because only good-quality salt is used to
preserve food.
