CULTURE DEFINED
Definition:
1. CULTURE is a complex whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, arts,
morals, customs
and other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of a
society. (E.B. Tylor)
2. CULTURE is the full range of learned human behavior patterns. (Boyd
& Richerson, 1985)
Culture has a powerful effect on a person’s daily life as it
influences his mode of thinking, feeling and acting.
Culture is what makes us what we are.
Characteristics of Culture:
1. Culture is learned.
Any person has the capacity to absorb any habit, value,
knowledge, skill and taste of
any community he lives with.
2. Culture is transmitted.
Culture can be transmitted orally and by writing, in an endless
number of ways, through
conditioning, imitation, suggestion, identification, reward and
punishment, formal
instruction and mass communication.
3. Culture is shared.
The elements of culture result from living and interacting with one
another. Culture
emerges out of the social life of the people.
4. Culture is patterned and integrated.
Culture is made up of elements patterned to a unified whole. It
answers the biological,
psychological, and social needs of the people.
5. Culture is adaptive/maladaptive.
No culture is static; therefore, it improves, develops overtime.
People need to adjust in
order to cope with the changes.
6. Culture is compulsory.
The members of the society have to follow the culture for them to
build a successful and
smooth relationship among each other.
7. Culture is essential for social life.
Culture is important. It is a mechanism for solving basic problems
of life.
Elements of Culture:
1. Beliefs
Beliefs represent man’s conviction about the reality of things.
They are shared ideas about how the world operates.
2. Values
Values indicate the moral imperatives and social conscience,
internalized by the individual members of the society.
3. Norms
Norms are rules, or standards of behavior in a particular culture
that dictate the members what they should do or not do in a
given situation.
4. Laws
Laws are formalized norms formulated by a governing body.
5. Sanctions
Sanctions are the socially imposed rewards or punishment.
REWARDS for those who behave properly, and PUNISHMENTS for
those who behave otherwise
