LESSON PLAN IN Mathematics IV

By: Dan Michael C Soria

I. Objective

at the end of this lesson, the students should be able to attain the following;

a. find the elapsed time in minutes and second;

b. estimate the duration of time in minutes; and

c. solve problems involving elapsed time.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Elapsed Time

Sub-topic: Time

Material : Model of clock, board and chalk

III. Procedure

A. Preparatory of Activity

• Greetings

• Prayer

• Checking of attendance

• Recall
Teacher's Activity Studentn's Activity

B. Motivation

Pass the assignment and let's cheek it.

Who want to read the problem?

Mother went to a grocery store to buy some

necessities. She entered the store at 7:45 a.m.
(The pupils read the problem)
Because there were many customers in the store,
she went out at 9:36 a.m. How long did it take her
in the grocery store?

Very Good!

What are the given?

Sir! Time ended 9 : 36 a.m.
Time stared 7 : 45 a.m
What operation will you use? Sir! The operation will be use is subtraction.

9:36 - 7:45 = N
What is the number sentence?

Very Good!

Now we will answer it on the board.

9 : 36 8 : 60 8 : 96
- 7 : 45 + 36 - 7 : 45
N = 8: 96 = 1: 51
So the answer is 1 hour and 51 minutes.

C. Presentation
So all of you are know how to read time is in it? Yes sir!
Very Good!

What comes to your mind when you hear the

word time? Sir! Time is the measure of the activity that we will
do during the day and at night.
Very Good!

The time can be defined as an ongoing and

continuous sequence of events that occur in
succession, from past through present, and to the
future. Time is used to quantify, measure or
compare the duration of events or the intervals
between them, and even, sequence events.

1 hour is equal to 60 minutes. One minute is equal

to 60 seconds.

Now.. How many minutes are there in 3 hours?

let's find the answer.

So I said there are 60 minutes in an hour. The

problem is finding the minutes in 3 hours.

So. We will use a addition or multiplication.

In Addition

60+60+60= 180✓

In multiplication

60 minutes
× 3 hours
180 minutes
The answer is 180 minutes.

How about 4 minutes =_________seconds

In one minutes there are 60 seconds, so we will

solve the problem.

In Addition

60+60+60+60= 240 seconds.

In multiplication

60 seconds × 4 minutes = 240 seconds.

So the answer is 240 seconds.

How about 300 seconds = __________minutes

Now how many seconds are there in 1 minutes?

Very Good!

So what are the answer of 300 seconds =

________ minutes. Sir there are 60 seconds in 1 minutes.
Very Good!

In this situation we can use division. Sir! 5 minutes

300 seconds ÷ 60 seconds = 5 minutes.

Did you get it?

Answer it on the board. You can use subtraction

and addition.
Yes Sir!
1. What is 15 minutes before 10:00 a.m?_____

Answer: 9:45 a.m

2. What is 8 minutes after 5:00 p.m?_____

Some pupil's answering in the board and the
Answer: 5:08 p.m others are answering in their chair.
3. What is 3 minutes before noon?_____

Answer: 11:57 a.m

Very Good! Let's give all five claps.

(1'2'3'4'5 claps).

Now. I have a problem

Steve helps his sister in making a project out of

recycled plastic bottles. They started making the
project at 5:32 p.m. If they finished the project at
6:25 p.m., how long did they make the project?
About how long did they make the project?

There are two questions that we are going to

answer:
Question a): How long did they make the project?
Question b): About how long did they make the
project?
In question, we need to find the exact elapsed
time , while in question 2 we will find the
estimated elapsed time.
Let us solve the problem by answering the
following question;
1. What are asked in the problem?

2. What are given in the problem?

3. What operation will you use? Sir! The time Steve and his sister spent in making
the project; and
4. What the number sentence?
The estimated time Steve and his sister spent in
5. How are the solutions done?
making the project.
Solution for question 1: How long did they make
Sir! 5:32 p.m. — time started
the project?
6:25 p.m. — time ended
So the given is ;
Sir! Subtraction
6 : 25 5: 60 5 : 85
- 5 : 32 + 25 - 5 : 32 Sir! 6:25 - 5:32 = N
N = 5:85 = 0 : 53

So, they made the project for 53 minutes.

Solution for question 2: About how long did they

make the project?

Round the times in tens of minutes

Actual Times Estimated Times

6 : 25 6: 30
- 5 : 32 - 5: 30
. 1: 00

Therefore, they made the project for about one

hour.

6. What are the answers to the problem?

Did you understand pupils?

Very Good!
D. Generalization
Sir! Actual Elapsed Time: 53 minutes
Did you understand our topic for today? Estimated Elapsed Time: 1 hour
Yes sir!
Very Good!
Now. What are the topic that I discuss for today?

Very Good..
What are the meaning of " time"?

Sir! The topic for today is all about time.

Very Good!

E. Application / Valuing Sir! The time can be defined as an ongoing and

continuous sequence of events that occur in
What are the importance of time? succession, from past through present, and to the
future. Time is used to quantify, measure or
compare the duration of events or the intervals
Very Good! between them, and even, sequence events.

Time helps us make a good habit of structuring

and organizing our daily activities

IV. Evaluation.

Activity A.

Complete the following table by providing the elapsed time.

Start Time End Time Elapsed Time

0:03:05 0:03:49 1.

8:05 p.m 8:54 p.m 2.

7:36 a.m 8:12 a.m 3.

Activity B.

Round the given time in tens of minutes and estimate the elapsed time.

1. Actual Times Rounded Times

Time ended 11:47 =

Time started 11:34 =

Estimated Elapsed Time =

2. Actual Time Rounded Times

Time Ended 5:42

Time Started 5:08

Estimated Elapsed Time

V. Assignment

Read the following problem and answer the following question.

During the weekends, Greta helps her mother in washing their clothes. They started washing at 8:10
a.m. and finished at 8: 55 a.m. How long did they wash their clothes?
