Test Administration Manual for the

Alternative Learning System Assessment for Basic Literacy (ALS-ABL)

POST-LITERATE LEVEL

INTRODUCTION

The Assessment for Basic Literacy (ABL) is the instrument to assess the
learners’ level of literacy: Neo-Literate and Post-Literate. It includes measures
of ability to supply personal information and prior knowledge of the two learning
strands: LS 1 - Communication Skills and LS 3 - Mathematical and Problem
Solving Skills.

The test will determine the entry level characteristics of the learners and will
help the ALS teachers design the learning plan and developmental activities
suited to the needs of the individual learner.

The revision of the ABL is a response to the need to align the ALS basic level
to the formal school K-12 Curriculum, particularly the Kinder and Grade I.

The written test portions of the ABL can be administered to learners in a small
group, to a maximum of 20. The test proper of the ABL contains multiple choice
items. It may take an hour to finish. The second form to be answered is the
Personal Information Sheet (PIS). It consists of four (4) questions which will be
administered individually. The examiner/teacher will read the questions and the
examinee/learner will give oral and written response.

As examiners/teachers, you will be expected to follow the directions given in


this manual for the administration of the different parts of the ABL.

A. Pretest Activities

1. Report to the ALS community learning center an hour before the time of
administration. Prepare the area such that it is conducive to the activity,
a desk for each examinee/learner, a chair for the examiner/teacher and
a table for the materials to be used during the test. The place must be
kept from noise and distractions during the test.

2. Prepare the materials needed for the session. Make sure they are
complete and there are no printing errors.

4. Ask the examinees/learners to be seated and clear their desks, except
for pencils, eraser, and sharpener. No cell phones or aids shall be
allowed during the test. Inform them that they may not go out during the
test so they must take care of personal needs before the start of the
session.

B. Administration of the Test

Prepare the Answer Sheets Set and the Test Booklets

As examiner/teacher, you will perform the procedures described for each


part of the test. You will read aloud the italicized portions of the
succeeding boxed instructions. Additional steps to follow may be
enclosed in parentheses.

1. Orientation of Examinees/Learners and Administration of Answer

When the examinees/learners are ready, say:

“Magandang umaga/hapon! Ako ay si __________, ang inyong


examiner/teacher ngayon. Bibigyan ko kayo ng Assessment for Basic
Literacy o ABL, para malaman natin kung anong level ng pag-aaral sa ALS
ang papasukan ninyo. Ipapasa ko ngayon ang mga answer sheet set.

Count the number of examinees/learners for each row and give


the exact number of answer sheets to the first examinee/learner of
each row.

“Kunin ang isang set at ipasa sa likuran ang natitira.” (When


everyone has received a set, continue :)

“Ang Answer Sheet Set na hawak ninyo ay mayroong dalawang


(2) pahina. Ang unang pahina ay ang Part I: Learning Strand 1 -
Communication Skills (Filipino) at Part II: Learning Strand 1 -
Communication Skills (English). Sa pangalawang pahina naman ay
napapaloob ang Part III: Learning Strand 3 - Mathematical and Problem
Solving Skills (Filipino) at Part IV: Learning Strand 3 - Mathematical and
Problem Solving Skills (English). Isulat ang inyong pangalan sa patlang na
nakalaan dito.

Demonstrate using the sample answer sheet on the board.


Write a sample complete name (ex. Name: Anna B. Abad).

2. Administration of Test Booklet

“Ngayon, ipapasa ko naman ang mga test booklet.”

Count the number of examinees/learners for each row and give


the exact number of test booklets to the first examinee/learner of each
row.

“Kumuha ng isang test booklet at ipasa sa likuran ang natitira.” (When


everyone has received a set, continue :)

Buklatin ninyo ang buklet sa pahina 1. Lahat ba tayo ay nasa pahina 1?


Kung ang lahat ay nasa pahina 1, babasahin ko ang pangkalahatang panuto

Pangkalahatang Panuto

Sa bawat bahagi ng pagsusulit, piliin ang iyong sagot mula sa mga


pagpipilian. Sa iyong sagutang papel, bilugan ang letra ng iyong napiling
sagot. Halimbawa, kung ang sagot mo sa isang tanong ay letra A, bilugan
ang letra A tulad ng nasa ibaba. (Write the illustration on the board)

Siguraduhing minamarkahan mo ang sagot sa tamang bilang nito.


Magmarka lamang ng isang sagot sa bawat aytem. Kung nais mong palitan
ang iyong sagot, burahin mo itong mabuti at palitan. Ang hindi maayos na
pagkakabura ay ituturing na mali.

Huwag sulatan ng kahit ano ang "Test Booklet”.

Kung nakatapos ka na ng bahagi ng pagsusulit, manatiling nakaupo


at maghintay ng karagdagang tagubilin.

3. Administration of Part I: Learning Strand 1 - Communication Skills
(Filipino)

When the examinees/learners are ready, say:

Bago natin simulan ang pagsusulit, sa Part I: Learning Strand 1 -


Communication Skills (Filipino) ipakikita ko muna kung saan ninyo ilalagay
ang inyong sagot. (Point to the sample answer sheet illustration on the board
and show on an actual answer sheet.) Halimbawa, kung ang sagot ninyo sa
unang tanong ay letrang A, bilugan ang letrang A. May tanong ba kayo?
Kung wala, magsimula na tayo sa Part I: Learning Strand 1 - Communication
Skills (Filipino). Buklatin ninyo ang buklet sa pahina 2. Lahat ba tayo ay nasa
pahina 2? Kung ang lahat ay nasa pahina 2, tayo ay magsimula na.

NOTE TO EXAMINER/TEACHER: Read the questions twice. DO NOT


READ THE OPTIONS.

1. Kaarawan ni Ethan. Nakatanggap siya ng bagong sapatos. Aling

7. Administration of the PIS

a. Preparatory Activities
 Set up a corner with a table and a chair for the
examiner/teacher and examinee/learner.
 Have on hand the following materials:
 PIS Answer Sheets
 PIS Score Sheet of Oral Response

 Write the name of each examinee/learner on the score sheet.
 Note the scoring rubric of both oral and written response as
follows:
1 point - complete response
0 point - incomplete or no response

b. Interview Proper
When the examiner/teacher is ready he will call the first
examinee/learners and have him seated comfortably.

Then say:

Magandang umaga/hapon muli sa iyo. Bibigyan kita ng PIS


answer sheet. Huwag mo munang sagutin hanggang hindi ko
sinasabi. (The examiner/teacher will give the PIS answer sheet.)
Babasahin ko ang tanong sa bawat aytem. Sagutin mo ito nang
pabigkas. Pagkatapos, saka mo isulat ang sagot sa answer
sheet.

May tanong ka ba? Kung wala, magsimula na tayo.

Then, examiner/teacher asks the question one by one, saying the


item number.

Say:

1. Ano ang kumpletong pangalan mo? (After the examinee/


learner answers the question orally, put his score in the
corresponding item on the PIS Score Sheet Oral Response
(PSSOR).

Then say: Ngayon isulat mo ang sagot sa answer sheet.

2. Ano ang kasarian mo? (After the examinee/learner answers


the question orally, score his response on the score sheet.)

Then say: Lagyan mo ng tsek ang tamang kahon.

3. Kailan ka isinilang o ipinanganak? (Score the response on


the score sheet.)

Then say: Isulat ang sagot sa answer sheet.

4. Saan ka nakatira? (After the examinee/learner answers the
question orally, tell him to write his answer on the space
provided.)

When the examinee/learner is finished, say:

Binabati kita. Natapos mo nang maayos ang pagsusulit. Maaari


ka nang bumalik sa iyong upuan.

Continue the same process of administering and scoring the oral


responses with the rest of the examinees/learners. Make sure to
record all the scores on the PSSORS. After all PIS AS have been
submitted, transfer the oral response scores of the
examinees/learners under column O in their answer sheet. Score the
examinees’/learners’ written response using the scoring rubric. Write
the written response score under column W.

C. Posttest Activities

1. After the test, put the test materials in order. Return the test booklets and
unused forms to their corresponding packs. Keep the materials in a
secure storage.

2. Put together all the accomplished answer sheets.

3. Score the examinees’/learners’ responses. Use the results to determine


the level of intervention for the examinees/learners in the ALS program.
