Practice sheet
1. For each case illustrated below, determine the moment of the force about point O.

2. Determine the resultant moment of the four forces acting on the rod shown in the figure
about point O.
3. A compound lever shown below is required to lift a load of 9 kN with an effort P. The
dimensions are AF1=450 mm, F1B=50 mm, BC=100 mm, CD=300 mm, DF2=75 mm. Find
the effort required to lift the load.

4. Determine the magnitude, direction and line of action of the resultant of the given set of
forces acting on a planer structure as shown in the figure below.
5. The caster unit is subjected to a pair of 400 N forces as shown. Determine the moment
associated with these forces.

6. As part of a test, the two aircraft engines are revved up and the propeller pitches are
adjusted so as to result in the fore and aft thrusts shown. What force F must be exerted by
the ground on each of the main braked wheels at A and B to counteract the turning effect
of the two propeller thrusts. Neglect any effect of the nose wheel C which is turned 90°
and unbraked.
7. ABCD is a square, each side being 20 cm and E is the middle point of AB. Forces of 7, 8,
12, 5, 9 and 6 kN act on the lines of directions AB, EC, BC, BD, CA and DE respectively
as shown in the figure. Find the magnitude, direction and position of the resultant force.
