EG 231 TUTORIAL SHEET 1

1. Determine the components of reaction at the ball-and-socket joint A and the tension in
each cable necessary for equilibrium of the rod.

2. The stiff-leg derrick used on ships is supported by a ball-and socket joint at D and two
cables BA and BC. The cables are attached to a smooth collar ring at B, which allows
rotation of the derrick about z axis. If the derrick supports a crate having a mass of 200
kg, determine the tension in the cables and the x, y, z components of reaction at D.

3. Determine the reactions at the pin A and the tension in cord BC. Set F = 40 kN. Neglect
the thickness of the beam.
4. Determine the horizontal and vertical components of reaction at the pin A and the
reaction of the rocker B on the beam.

5. Determine the reactions at the supports

6. The boom supports the two vertical loads. Neglect the size of the collars at D and B and
the thickness of the boom, and compute the horizontal and vertical components of force
at the pin A and the force in cable CB. Set F1 = 800 N and F2 = 350 N.
7. Determine the force in each member of the truss and state if the members are in tension
or compression. Set P1 = 20 kN, P2 = 10 kN.

8. Determine the force in each member of the truss, and state if the members are in tension
or compression. Set θ = 0°.

9. Determine the force in each member of the truss, and state if the members are in tension
or compression.
10. The maximum allowable tensile force in the members of the truss is f(t)max = 5kN, and the
maximum allowable compressive force is (Fc)max = 3 kN. Determine the maximum
magnitude P of the two loads that can be applied to the truss.

11. Determine the force in members ED, EH, and GH of the truss, and state if the members
are in tension or compression.

12. Determine the force in members EF, BE, BC and BF of the truss and state if these
members are in tension or compression. Set P1 = 9 kN, P2 = 12 kN, and P3 = 6 kN.
13. Determine the force in members BC, HC, and HG. After the truss is sectioned use a
single equation of equilibrium for the calculation of each force. State if these members
are in tension or compression.

14. Determine the horizontal and vertical components of force at pins A and D.

15. Determine the reactions at the supports A, C, and E of the compound beam.

16. Determine the horizontal and vertical components of force that the pins at A and B exert
on the frame.
17. Determine the internal normal force, shear force, and moment at point C.

18. Determine the internal normal force, shear force, and bending moment at point C.

19. Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the shaft (a) in terms of the parameters shown;
(b) set P = 9 kN, a = 2 m, L = 6 m. There is a thrust bearing at A and a journal bearing at
B.

20. Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the beam.
21. Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the beam.

22. Locate the center of gravity Ῡ of the homogeneous rod.

23. Locate the centroid Ῡ of the area.

24. A ring is formed by rotating the area 360° about the Ẋ –Ẋ axes. Determine its surface
area.
25. Determine the location (x, y, z) of the centroid of the homogeneous rod.

26. Locate the centroid Ῡ for the beam’s cross-sectional area.

27. Determine the location Ῡ of the centroid C of the beam having the cross-sectional area
shown.
28. Locate the centroid Ῡ of the cross-sectional area of the beam constructed from a channel
and a plate. Assume all corners are square and neglect the size of the weld at A.
