Tutorial 1

1. If the resultant force of the two tugboats is required to be directed towards the positive
x axis, and FB is to be a minimum, determine the magnitude of FR and FB and the angle
θ. Refer Fig.

2. The man is pulling a load of 4kg with one arm held as shown. Determine the force FH
this exerts on the humerus bone H, and the tension developed in the biceps muscle B.
Neglect the weight of the man’s arm. Refer fig.

3. A man raises a 10-kg joist, of length 4 m, by pulling on a rope. Find the tension T in the
rope and the reaction at A. Refer Fig.
4. Determine the reactions at the fixed support A for equilibrium of the beam. Refer fig.

5. The cable exert forces FAB=100N and FAC=120N on the ring at A as shown in figure.
Determine the magnitude of the resultant force acting at A. refer Fig
6. Two cables tied together at C are loaded as shown. Knowing that W = 840 N,
determine the tension (a) in cable AC, (b) in cable BC.

7. The 40-N collar A can slide on a frictionless vertical rod and is attached as shown to a
spring. The spring is unstretched when h = 300 mm. Knowing that the constant of the
spring is 560 N/m, determine the value of h for which the system is in equilibrium.

8. A 2000-N load Q is applied to the pulley C, which can roll on the cable ACB. The pulley is
held in the position shown by a second cable CAD, which passes over the pulley A and
supports a load P. Determine (a) the tension in the cable ACB, (b) the magnitude of load
P.
9. Determine the magnitude T of the tension in the supporting cable and the magnitude of
the force on the pin at A for the jib crane shown. The beam AB is a standard 0.5m I-beam
with a mass of 95 kg per meter of length

10. The elements of a heavy duty fluid valve are shown in the figure(P-6). When the member
OB rotates clockwise about the fixed pivot O under the action of the force P, the element
S slides freely upward in its slot, releasing the flow. If an internal torsion spring exerts a
moment M = 20 N.m as shown. Determine the force P required to open the valve. Neglect
all friction.
