Assignment – I [WINTER SEMESTER 2019 – 20]

1. The device is used for surgical replacement of the knee joint. If the force acting along
the leg is 360N, determine its components along the x’ and y axes.

Fig.1

2. If the resultant force FR is directed along a line measured 75° clockwise from the
positive x axis and the magnitude of F2 is to be a minimum, determine the magnitudes
of FR and F2 and the angle θ≤ 90°.

3. The 200 kg uniform tank is suspended by means of a 6m long cable, which is attached
to the sides of the tank and passes over the small pulley located at O. If the cable can
be attached at either points A and B, or C and D, determine which attachment
produces the least amount of tension in the cable. What is this tension?

4. Knowing that the tension in the cable AC is 1260 N. Determine the angle between the
cable AC and the boom AB. Also determine the projection on AB of the force exerted
by the cable AC at point A.

5. Determine the force is each cable needed to support the 3500 kg platform. Set d = 2m.

6. Collars A and B are connected by a 525 mm long wire and can slide freely on
frictionless rods as shown in Fig. If a force P = 341 N j is applied to the collar A, draw
free body diagram for collars A and B and determine i) the tension in the wire AB
when y = 155 mm, ii) the magnitude of the force Q required to maintain the
equilibrium of the system.

7. Shear leg derrick is used to haul the 200 kg net of fish onto the dock. Determine the
compressive force along each legs AB and CB and the tension in the winch cable DB.
Assume the force in each leg is acting along the axis.

8. The 200 kg slider at A is held in place on the smooth vertical bar by the cable AB as
shown in Fig. Determine the moment about the bottom of the bar (point C with
coordinates x = 2 m, y = z = 0) due to the force exerted on the slider by the cable.

9. In picking up a load from position B, a cable tension T of magnitude 24 kN is
developed. Calculate the moment which T produces about the base ‘0’ of the
construction crane.

10. A fixed crane has a mass of 1000 kg and is used to lift a 2400-kg crate as shown in
Fig. It is held in place by a pin at A and a rocker at B. The center of gravity of the
crane is located at G. Determine the components of the reactions at A and B.

11. Determine the magnitudes of the force R and coup le M exerted by the nut and bolt on
the loaded bracket at ‘O’ to maintain equilibrium.
